Position OverviewOur client is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Assistant Controller with a strong background in the government industry. This role will support the Controller in overseeing financial operations, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining the integrity of financial reporting. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of government accounting standards and practices, as well as the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities for Assistant Controller
Assist in the preparation, analysis, and presentation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and government accounting standards (GASB).
Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
Ensure compliance with government regulations, contracts, and grant requirements.
Support the preparation and management of budgets, forecasts, and financial reports.
Monitor internal controls and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and compliance.
Collaborate with external auditors during annual audits and other regulatory reviews.
Assist in the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures.
Analyze financial data to provide actionable insights and recommendations to senior management.
Manage and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of accountability and professional growth.
Qualifications for Assistant Controller
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
Strong knowledge of government accounting standards (GASB) and compliance requirements.
Experience with grant accounting, fund accounting, and financial reporting in the government sector.
Proficiency in financial systems and ERP software; advanced Excel skills required.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across
