Job Description

The Accountant, Senior prepares and presents financial reports to ensure an accurate reflection of the foundation\'s financial position. Primarily responsible for account reconciliations and monthly journal entries to ensure accuracy in accordance with the accounting close processes in a timely manner. Coordinates and provides guidance to lower level employees to promote clarity within the unit. The position recommends new accounting and fiscal control policies to improve department performance and increase efficiency. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of non-profit financial accounting.

Account Reconciliation and Accounting Close Entries - 30%

Prepare timely account reconciliations and accounting close entries to maintain accurate financial records for the foundation. For example, maintain operational accounting transactions for timely reporting.

Accounting Research & Guidance - 25%

Research and provide guidance on how to properly account for transactions and/or processes to ensure accurate reflection of the foundation\'s financials.

Financial Analysis and Reports - 20%

Prepare, produce, and present monthly financial reports for review and analysis. For example, providing variance analysis for month over month financial reporting.

Maintain Data & Accounting Systems - 20%

Maintain and provide oversight of data and integrity of subledger and accounting systems. For example, this will include reviewing and analyzing gift agreements for proper system setup.

Other - 5%

Perform other ad-hoc duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor\'s degree in accounting or related field. 3 to 5 years of accounting experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Accounting experience in non-profits.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

Advanced knowledge of accounting tools, procedures, processes, policies, and concepts, such as preparation of financial statements, account reconciliations, journal entries, invoicing, revenue receipts, and other financial documents. Knowledge of financial reporting in non-profits.

Skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel). Skill in writing detailed numerical computations and reports. Skill in computerized accounting systems and applications, such as accounting software.

Abilities

Communicates effectively, listens actively, analyzes complex situations and anticipate issues.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.
