General Information & Responsibilities
The Accountant performs grant and restricted funds accounting functions of the College and the Black Hawk College Foundations under the supervision of the Director of Accounting.
Description of Duties
DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Grant Accounting:
a.Assists grant managers with grant applications and budgeting processes as needed.
b.Assists grant managers with timely and accurate recording of all revenues and expenditures.
c.Reads, understands and interprets all financial requirements pertaining to grants.
d.Proactively assists grant managers with timely and accurate expenditure and drawdown of grant-related funds.
e.Prepares and reviews periodic reports before submission by grant managers.
1)Prepares and submits reports as required to various granting agencies.
2)Periodically works with external auditors from state and federal agencies as necessary.
f.Coordinates all aspects of grants portion of external audit including:
1)Prepares reports and spreadsheets for the auditor including schedules of all federal monies received.
2)Maintains organized grant files of applications, agreements, and modifications.
g.Prepares reports and spreadsheets, conducts analysis and review of system data, and presents findings.
h.Maintains all restricted and agency accounts of the College.
i.Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of various College reports, including but not limited to: monthly Board of Trustees finance-related reports, other recurring reports as needed by the Director of Accounting.
j.Responsible for monthly reconciliation of restricted fund bank account.
k.Reconciles general ledger accounts and makes necessary adjustments.
l.Responsible for capital asset accounting district-wide.
m.Responsible for ensuring compliance with record retention requirements.
n.Develops and implements procedures and training programs as appropriate and needed.
Foundation Accounting:
o.Verifies, processes, reconciles, and records all monies received.
p.Ensures all financial information is accurately recorded in a timely manner.
q.Prepares monthly financial statements and additional statements as requested.
r.Record and reconcile investment activity as required.
s.Maintains separate accounting system using designated software.
t.Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES:
a.Participates in annual budget process as needed.
b.Assists with annual external audit.
c.Performs other job related duties as assigned.
OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

PRINCIPAL WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
a.Works directly with the Director of Accounting and other Finance staff.
b.Works cooperatively with administrators, budget managers, staff, faculty, auditors, and students.
c.Works directly and cooperatively with Foundation staff.
d.Works directly and cooperatively with Grant writers and Grant managers.
Education & Experience
(To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.)
a.Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
b.Certified Public Accountant preferred.
c.Minimum of one (1) year of experience in non-profit, governmental, or educational accounting required.
d.Knowledge of an integrated finance software and experience with computer applications required.
e.Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. Advanced skill level in same preferred.
f.Experience with Quick Books preferred.
g.Working knowledge of investment accounting theory and application preferred.
h.Strong written and oral communication skills required.
i.Above average organizational, attention to detail, and analytical skills required.
