Position Summary: Performs various chemical tests and analyses on sludge and wastewater samples, and analytically determines the presence, extent and nature of pollutants and other substances. Determines sampling methods and the types of tests used for water and wastewater analysis, and performs quality control and quality assurance procedures. Maintains test results, which are used by other PVSC personnel for regulatory, monitoring, enforcement and treatment purposes. Conducts research projects directed towards the solution of specific problems, and trains department staff in analytical techniques. Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry is desired. A degree in Chemical Engineering, Biology or Environmental Science may be accepted if experience qualifications are met. Experience in instrumental analyses is essential. Experience: Chemist II – Minimum of six (6) years' experience in a wastewater, industrial or environmental laboratory. Chemist III- Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a wastewater, industrial or environmental laboratory. Requirements: Must have knowledge of chemical principles, theories and techniques, as well as knowledge of the practical and common methods and procedures for laboratory analyses. Fluent knowledge in the use of analytical instruments, including, but not limited to, atomic absorption, spectrophotometers, Ion Chromatography (IC) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) in performing varied analytical procedures is required. Must be fluent in the theory, practical knowledge and use of modern laboratory instrumentation. Must have general knowledge of biochemistry as it relates to Mathematics, Biology and Bacteriology, and thorough knowledge of the principles of Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis. Working knowledge of the following systems and software is preferred; Metrohm 94, Professional IC Vario, MagICNet, Metrohm 941 Eluent Production Module and Metrohm 858 Professional Sample Processor is preferred. Must be organized, and be able to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to changing work priorities in a busy, service oriented environment. Must be able to develop effective work methods, demonstrate proficiency in data entry work, be proficient in preparing clear, concise and accurate reports, and establish and maintain suitable records. Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system, and may be required to work indoors and outdoors. Work shifts vary and involve a rotating weekend work schedule. Overtime may be required. Laboratory technicians and chemists also work as part of a team in surroundings that are kept clean, well-lit and temperature controlled. Physical Demands: Possess the physical attributes required to perform the job duties with or without a reasonable accommodations. To perform the essential functions of this positions the employee must be able to: sit, stand, walk, stoop, climb, kneel, lift up to 40lbs., carry, reach, push, pull, use a keyboard, minor use of tools, manual dexterity, visual acuity, hearing and speaking.
