Overview
A Las Vegas Labor Union is seeking an Employment Lawyer/Labor Representative to manage Union contracts. The ideal candidate will have union representation experience or a background in labor law, with a strong preference for familiarity with Nevada employment law. This role requires expertise in labor rights and negotiations to ensure compliance and advocate for members.
Summary:
The Labor Union Representative will be tasked with fostering constructive labor relations by supporting the creation and management of union initiatives. This position involves developing, executing, and upholding union contracts to strengthen the relationship between employees and their union representatives. The role partners with leadership and department heads to encourage staff engagement and align with organizational objectives. By handling member concerns at the departmental level, the representative serves as a valuable resource for management, assisting in issue resolution and ensuring labor relations are a trusted and accessible support system for all union members.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provides guidance to Union leadership on policies, procedures, performance assessments, contract interpretation, and disciplinary issues across various departments, including those with high-level management or political sensitivity. Responds to policy interpretation questions, investigates concerns, and makes recommendations based on collective bargaining agreements and past practices.
- Identifies legally sensitive issues and escalates them to supervisors or legal counsel. Assists with employee relations, advising management on documentation, investigations, and disciplinary actions. Suggests policy changes as needed.
- Manages the grievance process for union and non-union staff, facilitating discussions between management and employees. Prepares department reps for grievance meetings, acts as an impartial officer in third-step grievances, and makes recommendations based on facts and testimony.
- Determines which cases proceed to arbitration and negotiates settlements. Prepares analysis for arbitration, works with Legal Counsel, and may testify on behalf of the Union. Ensures compliance with arbitration decisions.
- Participates in client negotiations, researching potential issues, analyzing proposals, and drafting counter-proposals. Maintains accurate records of grievances, arbitrations, and case files in a timely manner.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in Union Labor, Employee & Labor Relations, and/or Employment Law.
- Experience working directly with Unions or in collaboration with them.
Education:
- Master of Laws (LLM), Juris Doctor (J.D.), or a Human Resource Degree, along with 5+ years of relevant experience in Employee and Labor Relations.
