This position is located within the Division of Nursing Services, Kayenta Health Center, Primary Care Branch, Kayenta, AZ. In this capacity, performs such functions as planning, organizing, directing and reviewing work, administering personnel matter, assist in management of budget, establishing and maintaining logistical systems and accomplishing assignments as required. Incumbent reports to the Supervisory Nurse in Outpatient Department.

Duties

Directs temporary and permanent employees.

Involved in defining and communicating the Service Unit's mission, vision, and value statement and belongs to a multidisciplinary system in order to affect policy decisions.

Directs and manages patient care activities in all clinical areas in the absence of the Unit Supervisor and is accountable for patient care provided by inherent departments after hours, weekends, and on holidays.

Ensures direct patient care staff demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide comprehensive nursing care appropriate to the age of the patients served in all clinical areas of the facility.

Actively supports Service Unit's Recruitment/Retention activities; serves on facility wide committee as assigned; assists, as directed, with all activities related to compliance with accrediting bodies and Federal regulations.

Assist the Supervisory Nurse for Outpatient and Emergency Room to assure compliance with the facility wide performance improvement plan and the Navajo Area program requirements.

Evaluates research and incorporates appropriated findings into practice.

Strives to provide a customer-centered service though well-planned systems and processes that function with efficiency, precision, and consistency.

Assists with patient care in the Outpatient Department.

Coordinates patient care activities and support activities to assure smooth facility operation.

Creates and maintains an organizational environment for open communications, trust and respect.

Conducts meetings and conferences with subordinates/staff to explain work requirements, methods and procedures as needed and answer technical questions regarding work assignments.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S) :

Education:

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School:

Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure:

For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, The District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

GS-11:

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Successful completion of a PHD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or

At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

Experience:

The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing. Examples include: Extensive experience in nursing practice, service, and education; make independent judgements related to assignments, coverage and supervision; provide training and mentor nursing staff and provide input on evaluations.
