This position is located in the Nursing Department of the Cass Lake Indian Health Service located in Cass Lake, Minnesota in the Bemidji Area. Incumbent performs professional nursing duties in an ambulatory, inpatient, emergency room, pediatric or other setting as assigned. The incumbent will rotate shifts as needed, including 8 or 12 hour shifts, weekends to include every other weekend and may be subject to on-call requirements.

Duties

Take initial medical history on all patients. Perform visual assessment (heart , lungs), observation and some physical assessment (heart, lungs) observe and recognize unusual or complex problems and make proper disposition. Assist physician during patient examinations. Collect specimens and orders appropriate laboratory studies after thorough assessment and orders x-ray studies as authorized by physician.

Assess health problems within the following categories: respiratory illness, abdominal pain, urological, musculoskeletal, dermatological, patients. Assess and triage chronic disease entities such as chronic back and shoulder pain, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes and hypertension and refers appropriately to the physician for further evaluation and care.

Record accurate, timely and appropriate information in the medical record through use of SOAP method of charting, which includes vital signs, laboratory and x-ray data and physical findings.

Teach patients about the nature of the illness, treatment and general health measures. Acquaint patients with military and civilian resources available and assists with arrangements for follow-up care based on results of laboratory and x-ray reports and the mental health and well-being of the patient. Notify patients regarding lab results and provide nursing advice to patients telephoning the clinic. Document phone conversations and advice given.

Education

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the , , , or an accrediting body recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School : Official certification from the is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure

For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the . In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience

The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Basic Requirements for the GS-05 Grade Level To qualify at the GS-5 grade level, applicants must meet one of the following qualification requirements:

Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience; or

Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and one full year of professional nursing experience.

Basic Requirements for the GS-07 Grade Level In addition to the above Basic Requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and eligibility under the

Possession of a bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level); Examples of experience include: Providing comprehensive nursing care to patients where conditions and treatment are normally of a non-critical nurse; observing patient's condition, assessing nursing needs and providing required nursing care, administering prescribed oral medications, hypodermic injections and intravenous feeding; observing and recording temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration data and effect of medication, preparing patient for tests, examinations and treatment, preparing and reviewing records, laboratory sheets, directing the work of aides, assistants, LPNs and trainee nurses.

Possession of a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing and two full years of professional nursing experience; or

Completion of at least one full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.

Basic Requirements for the GS-09 Grade Level In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing; or

At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Examples include: Providing comprehensive physician care to patients based on the physician's medical care plan and the physical, mental and emotional needs of the patient, administering oxygen, IV fluid, blood transfusions and prescribed oral, subcutaneous and intramuscular medications, managing nasal pharyngeal and gastric suction as well as a variety of other drainage tubes, making nursing care assignments to various skill levels of professional and non-professional personnel, preparing patient for surgical and/or diagnostic procedures, closely observing post-operative.
