Job Summary:
The Garnishment Supervisor is responsible for managing and supervising the day-to-day operations of the garnishment team. This includes overseeing the processing of wage garnishments, tax levies, child support orders, and other legal deductions in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. The role involves ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, managing team performance, and resolving complex garnishment issues. The Garnishment Supervisor will also collaborate with various departments to ensure the smooth execution of garnishment processes and maintain accurate records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervision & Team Management:
- Supervise a team of garnishment specialists to ensure timely and accurate processing of garnishment orders.
- Provide training, guidance, and performance management for team members.
- Conduct regular team meetings to discuss issues, updates, and best practices.
- Ensure employees are well-versed in garnishment laws, policies, and procedures.
- Garnishment Processing:
- Oversee the timely and accurate processing of all garnishments, including wage garnishments, child support, tax levies, and other court-ordered deductions.
- Ensure garnishments are applied correctly to employee paychecks and deductions are compliant with relevant laws.
- Review and approve complex garnishment cases or special situations.
- Ensure that all garnishment notices and payments are processed within deadlines.
- Compliance & Legal Oversight:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local garnishment laws and regulations.
- Monitor and interpret changes in garnishment laws and update processes accordingly.
- Coordinate with legal counsel or external agencies when necessary to resolve complex garnishment issues.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all garnishments, including the retention of documents as required by law.
- Reporting & Documentation:
- Prepare and submit regular reports on garnishment activities, including deductions, payments, and outstanding balances.
- Maintain detailed documentation of garnishment cases for auditing and reporting purposes.
- Ensure all records are accurate and comply with company policies and regulatory standards.
- Customer Service & Issue Resolution:
- Act as the primary point of contact for employees and external agencies (e.g., state child support agencies, IRS) regarding garnishment issues.
- Investigate and resolve garnishment-related inquiries or complaints from employees.
- Work with HR, payroll, and legal departments to resolve discrepancies or conflicts related to garnishment orders.
- System Management & Improvement:
- Utilize payroll and HR systems to track and manage garnishment deductions.
- Identify and implement process improvements to streamline garnishment procedures.
- Ensure the accuracy of data entry and tracking systems related to garnishments.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Experience:
- 6+ years of experience in garnishment processing, payroll, or related field.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role preferred.
- Experience with payroll systems, garnishment management software, and legal compliance requirements.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of garnishment laws, tax levies, child support, and wage garnishment processes.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Experience with payroll software or HRIS systems is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Certifications (Optional but preferred):
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or similar certification may be beneficial.
Work Environment:
- Full-time position, typically during standard office hours.
- Office-based, with occasional remote work options depending on the company’s policies.
- May require interaction with external agencies and internal departments.
