Job Description:
The Senate Majority Office is seeking a skilled communications and public relations professional to join their team as Communications Director.
The Senate Majority Office provides support services to all Senate Democratic Caucus members and their legislative staff. During Legislative Sessions, Senate Majority Office staff will track legislation, conduct policy research, develop policy proposals, provide media support for Caucus members, provide strategic advice and assist the Democratic Leader in organizing the Caucus and its agenda.
The Communications Director plans, designs and executes a public affairs program for the Senate Democratic Caucus and individual members. The Communications Director develops a strategic communications plan designed to bring about public information and education on major legislative proposals.
This position must be very aware of interpersonal contacts and sensitive to confidential and political situations, which may occasionally expose the employee to angry individuals or stressful situations. Must be aware of correct political and social protocol and exercise precise judgment in these areas.
This is a full-time continuing position beginning January 2025. This position will report to the Senate Democratic Chief of Staff.
The Communication Director's work is primarily in-person, based at the Capitol in Salem, Oregon. During session, staff are required to work in Salem. During the interim, this will be a hybrid position with a combination of remote work and in-person meetings.

UCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED WORK EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS IN: Experience in print or broadcast journalism experience is strongly preferred Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Substantial experience in media relations, preferably in a political or public policy arena. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a willingness to work long hours in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment. Understand the legislative environment and have knowledge of Oregon's political landscape. Strong understanding of political communication. Independently motivated, with strong organization and planning skills. The ability to work as a member of a fast-paced team - flexibility and the ability to multi-task. Over the next two years, the Capitol Building is undergoing extensive renovation and construction projects which may limit accessibility to employees. This will require Legislative employees to work both from home and within the building as the construction project dictates.
