Responsibilities: 
  • Uses customer service principles and techniques to deal with patients calmly and pleasantly.
  • Monitor and track laboratory orders and results to ensure orders are placed appropriately with payable diagnosis and results are received to the correct ordering provider.
  • Responsible for laboratory billing through vendor website to correct as needed, providing appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes are in place to provide for timely billing and payment.
  • Responsible for researching patient disputed bills and working in collaboration with Ancillary Services Supervisor to resolve all issues.
  • Pre-visiting for laboratory appointments:  Review lab schedules ahead of time (2-4 weeks) to ensure orders are placed/placed correctly prior to phlebotomists pre-visiting for upcoming appointments.  Collaborate with ordering provider for needed / corrected orders.  
  • Collaborates with Ancillary Services Supervisor for additional needs and duties related to quality assurance, billing, and laboratory services.
  • Serve as emergency back-fill for unplanned laboratory staff absences when available.
  • Prepares equipment to efficiently collect specimens. 
  • Performs venipuncture, arterial and capillary punctures on patients as directed by physician and following medical practice protocols and OSHA standards related to safety, infection control, and confidentiality.
  • Conducts testing on Point of Care specimens.
  • Appropriately prepares all specimens for transport to testing laboratories.
  • Appropriately identifies correct laboratory for testing specific to patient and insurance.
  • Enters data into computer.
  • Assists patients before, during, and after procedure. Instructs on proper urine collection procedures.
  • Cleans/sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area following safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures.
  • Inventories supplies and places orders to ensure adequate supplies are available for all procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited medical vocational institution with phlebotomy course diploma. Certified Phlebotomist.
  • Minimum one year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Medical practice experience.
  • National certification through American Medical Technologists as a registered phlebotomy technician.  
  • Current CPR certification.   
  • Able to utilize vendor websites to retrieve laboratory results and lab bills. 
  • Proficient with Athena EMR.
Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques
  • Knowledge of clinic protocols and policies
  • Computer literate
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of payable ICD-10 codes for laboratory testing
  • Knowledge of /experience with Excel spreadsheets
  • Skill in performing efficient and effective draws
  • Skill in conducting cooperative interactions with patients and staff
  • Skill in tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions
  • Ability to communicate calmly and clearly with patients
  • Ability to interpret and respond appropriately to instructions
  • Ability to coordinate eye–hand movements to ensure patient comfort during blood draws
  • Able to work independently and prioritize tasks
Salary is commensurate with experience.
