Job Description: Accounting Manager
The Accounting Manager will be hands-on and responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting functions of the Company’s corporate headquarters location. This position must adhere to tight deadlines and addresses a variety of accounting activities including general ledger review and preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation and the support of budget and forecast activities.
The Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. Additionally, the Accounting Manager is responsible for the supervision and development of accounting staff, and will be working closely with the Controller. Opportunity to grow into Assistant Controller.
Job description and technical requirements:
• Establishes and/or applies policies and procedures to ensure that accounting transactions are are recorded in compliance with company policies and GAAP.
• Schedule, manage and coordinate the monthly/quarterly/annual close and SEC filing process including the review and/or preparation of journal entries and reconciliations, supporting schedules and drafting financial statements.
• Ensure adherence to and maintenance of internal control systems to prevent inaccuracies in financial reporting and fraud.
• Supervises, directs and reviews the work of accounting staff including but not limited to cash management, accounts payable, purchasing, and general ledger reconciliations/journal entries.
• Requires a strong knowledge of technical accounting matters, robust internal control processes and the Company’s accounting policies and procedures.
• Will review and supervise the
a) preparation and processing of payroll by the payroll staff (10% of time) ;
b) the processing of accounts payable and deal with AP and vendor matters (20% of time) .
• Assist Controller with the preparation of external financial statement and SOX review and audits.
• Assist Controller with the preparation of billings for an external grant and the preparation of Clinical Trial accounting. Work collaboratively with department leaders to accurately monitor and report on research & development spend, accruals, budgets and forecasts.
• Assist Controller with the management of general administrative functions for their location, which may include matters related to HR, IT and facilities.
• Design, implement and maintain efficient and effective accounting processes, procedures and internal controls.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications and Experience:
• minimum of 5 years’ experience. Experience with public company reporting, controls and supporting audits
• Public accounting experience will be helpful.
• BS in accounting required; CPA preferred.
• Experience preparing reconciliations, supporting schedules and consolidations.
• Experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, including specific experience with clinical research/drug development process and related accounting is preferred.
• Expert knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls, and the SEC filing process.
• Familiarity with Equity management software and XBRL.
• Experience entering transactions, journal entries and extracting data from mid level ERP systems, strong Intacct and Bill.com experience preferred.
• Computer skills: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and database tools.
• Effective time management skills. Ability to handle competing priorities and ad hoc requests and meet deadlines with minimum supervision.
• Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to listen effectively and present accounting information to various levels including non-accountants within an organization.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality over all HR and finance/accounting matters and information.
• Hands-on, can-do, positive attitude. Ready and willing to work closely with senior management in the development of the business and supporting systems.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with multiple, cross-functional areas in a collaborative, team environment. Even tempered, patient, with a service orientation.
