Job Description esVolta seeks a motivated and energetic candidate to join our team as a Technical Director – Energy Storage to support the technology selection and readiness of utility-scale energy storage projects. The Technical Director will report to the Company’s Head of Engineering, and the role will be responsible for energy storage technology assessments, compliance, and development of the best-fit strategies for esVolta projects. Key Responsibilities Lead market technology readiness for integrated short and long duration energy storage systems and in collaboration with the Head of Engineering, create technology implementation, testing and qualification strategies and roadmaps. Conduct technology selection, independent assurance and risk assessments, accounting for: safety, bankability, insurability, health, degradation, lifecycle behavior, battery chemistry, thermal management, controls, charge and discharge strategies, and obsolescence. Interpret, analyze, and synthesize data in a manner that enables clear communication of advanced technical concepts. Lead the development and improvement of technical RFP bidding and evaluation processes and tools. In collaboration with Development Engineering, support the creation of techno-economic analysis and reviews for specific technology applications. In collaboration with the Company’s HSE Director, conduct fire suppression and prevention technology suitability, risk assessments and recommendations. Conduct BOP technology (Inverters, Transformers, Meters etc.) readiness, suitability, and risk assessments for project pipeline suitability. Track and analyze technology performance, creating regular data centric reporting that can be integrated into lessons learned and provide direct feedback into the technology selection and procurement process. Create and maintain technology SOW requirements (Scopes of Work) to be implemented into future projects EPCA SOW Exhibits. Be the focal point for TEI (Tax Equity Investment) / IE (Independent Engineer) technology related due diligence. Assist the Project Management, Project Engineering and Asset Management teams as required with project/asset activities during preconstruction, construction and operations. Project Standard and Certification Compliance Assurance:
Assist in PPA and GIA evaluations to ensure current procured and recommended technologies are functionally capable of the contractually required performance requirements.
Quality Assurance
Track and manage technology suppliers QA/QC compliance through the procurement process. Create supplier QA/QC and FAT SOW and standards for EPC companies and third-party contract inspection companies.
Safety
Focal point for ensuring designed and deployed technologies meet industry compliance (UL, NFPA) standards. Assist with major incident analysis as required. Create and assist in the of FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) and HMA (Hazard Mitigation Analysis).
Skills and Qualifications 12+ years’ experience in engineering with a minimum of 5 years in renewable energy / energy storage. Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, physics, or electrochemistry. Professional Engineer Certification. Subject Matter Expert in BESS related standards including IBC, NFPA 855, CEC, CFC, IEEE, NEMA, NEC, OSHA, and UL. Expert level proficiency in battery technology for storage application, battery systems, modules and subcomponents, power conversion systems (PCS) and controls (EMS, VPP, PCS – level). Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel and familiarity with MATLAB, Python and/or other software modeling tools and associated programming. Outstanding interpersonal skills, including an ability to maintain calm and effective exchanges by all parties during stressful situations, and executive level reporting that ensures timely action and decision making in time-pressured scenarios. Willingness to be remotely based and ability to travel or relocate to other project sites. Willing to travel up to 25%. Compensation The annual salary plus bonus range for this position is listed below. The actual salary and bonus offered will depend on the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate.
