Sr. Software Engineer (Computational Geometry)

SpaceX, Hawthorne, California, 90250

Sr. Software Engineer (Computational Geometry) at SpaceX Hawthorne, CA SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. SR.SOFTWARE ENGINEER (COMPUTATIONAL GEOMETRY) We are looking for adaptable, resilient software engineers with experience developing software to accelerate quality, speed, and efficiency of manufacturing processes at SpaceX. Our team is building out the next generation of computation geometry tools for additive manufacturing, investment and high-pressure die-casting production processes at SpaceX. This work will support our Starship and Starlink programs. Our team consists of engineers developing reliable, scalable, and efficient numerical analysis solvers to support these processes via simulation. We also develop best in class in process monitoring solutions for data collection and automated analysis. You will have the opportunity to make an impact on the future of manufacturing at SpaceX. In this role, you will lead development and improvement of our pre-print software platform for our metal 3D printing systems. You will also have the opportunity to help improve our in house numerical multiphysics simulation tools for invest and high pressure die casting. Your work will have a direct impact on the speed, quality, and reliability of our manufacturing processes. RESPONSIBILITIES: Own the continual improvement of SpaceX Additive Manufacturing pre-print software Support our additive manufacturing teams as they translate next generation parts into printable reality Develop tooling and algorithms to ensure quality prints by accounting for geometric deformation during print Integrate pre-print software directly with our simulations and modeling software Develop novel solutions for pre-print processing to enable highly stable prints Work closely with materials and processes engineers to understand the impact of the pre-print software on material properties Maintain interfaces between the CAD tools and the pre-print software Collaborate with machine learning engineers and in-situ monitoring tools to feed observed flaws back into the pre-print software to improve yield Refine mesh generation processes for additive and casting processes Support case generation and compute resources for pre-print and simulation softwares Develop algorithms for geometry deformation, procedural geometry generation, and space-filling operations Work closely with simulation and machine learning experts to link model outputs to process inputs Deep dive into your users’ problems to find and create efficient solutions Work closely with our production engineers and technicians to provide the best first principles solution to their needs Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies Review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency) BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or STEM discipline and 5 years of software development experience; OR 7 years of professional experience building software 5 years experience with C++ software development 2 years computational geometry experience PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in computer science, applied mathematics, or related field Experience with mathematical optimization techniques Experience integrated with CAD software Deep knowledge of 2D and 3D meshing Demonstrated proficiency in Python Experience with compute cluster management tools such as SLURM Demonstrated ability to work in a manufacturing environment Knowledge of GPU programming frameworks such as CUDA Basic UI development skills Experience developing advanced software for 3D visual effects, animation, or graphics industries Knowledge of solidification physics COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Pay Range: Software Engineer/Senior: $160,000.00 - $220,000.00/per year Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short & long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation & will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Exempt employees are eligible for 5 days of sick leave per year.
