Position Description

Job Title:

Communications Specialist

FLSA:

Part-Time; Non-Exempt

Reporting Functions:

This position is in the Office of Communications and reports to the Executive Director of Communications.

Job Function:

The Communications Specialist must be well-formed in the Catholic faith and have a willingness and ability to represent the Bishop and the authentic teachings of the Catholic Church without equivocation through a wide range of communications and public relations activities. The Communications Assistant advances this mission through a variety of means, working with the Office of the Bishop and with all Secretariats in the Diocese.

In addition, the Communications Specialist will support the Executive Director of Communications by helping to create and implement communications strategies that promote the mission and activities of the Diocese. This role will also involve assisting with administrative tasks, as well as with projects within the Office of Communications. It is ideal for someone who is committed to the values and mission of the Catholic Church and who has a passion for reaching out to the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities Support the Bishop's Office: Prioritize the needs of the Bishop's Office in articulating and promoting the mission of the Diocese. Content Creation:

Assist in writing, editing, and proofreading content for our newspaper, The AD Times, our news site, AD Today, press releases, statements, the Diocesan website, and occasionally for social media. Explore opportunities for creative writing by contributing articles or other written content that showcases the Diocese's mission and activities.

Administrative Support:

Inquiries and Communication: Respond to inquiries about the Diocese received by the Office of Communications via email or mail. Team Support: Provide administrative support to the communications team, including sending emails via Flocknote or Outlook, maintaining databases, crafting agendas, and scheduling meetings. Directories: Packaging and mailing out Directories throughout the year.

Event Coordination

Event Planning and Promotion: Assist with the planning and promotion of diocesan events, including drafting promotional materials. Event Coverage: Demonstrate openness and adaptability to cover events across the Diocese, capturing quality photos and crafting compelling news articles that encapsulate the essence of each event.

Community Engagement

Craft Media Responses: Collaborate with the Chancellor to craft a response for the media if the Executive Director of Communications is unavailable. Research and Reporting: Conduct research on community outreach efforts to assess communication effectiveness with various Diocesan groups and recommend ways to enhance engagement.

Educational Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Writing, Theology, English, or similar program, or a degree in another field accompanied by sufficient work experience in digital communications Previous experience in communications, marketing, or a related field is preferred Familiarity with WordPress, Flocknote, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Analytics, and other digital media tools Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with Clergy and Parishes Knowledge of Catholic theological and liturgical traditions Proficiency in Spanish is a plus Other Qualifications:

Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel and Word Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to be creative, resourceful, flexible, and work collaboratively with others Ability to set, manage, and meet deadlines Solid analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to maintain confidentiality Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to sit, walk, and stand, talk and hear, both in person and by telephone. Use of hands to operate standard office equipment, with occasional reaching and lifting up to 10 pounds is required. Valid driver's license required.

Working Conditions:

Regular working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Flexible part-time hours, approximately 25-30 hours per week, with the possibility of evening or weekend work to attend meetings or events, and to handle urgent communications.
