General Summary:

The Plumber is responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining pipes, fixtures and other plumbing used for water distribution and waste water disposal in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plumbers will perform the following functions in their daily routine;
  • Install and repair pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Study building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
  • Inspect structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
  • Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors and underground, using ruler, spirit level, plumb bob and other equipment.
  • Cut openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipefittings, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine.
  • Bends pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand. Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Joins pipe by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and calks joints.
  • Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
  • Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains. May weld holding fixtures to steel structural members.
  • Maintain and/or test backflow prevention devices.
  • May assist other trades in basic carpentry and other basic construction/maintenance tasks.
  • May direct and coordinate activities of other workers in performing tasks directly related to operating and maintaining the system or systems.
  • Performs routine to general maintenance services including painting ,equipment repair, grounds keeping, and snow removal.
  • Performs repairs on a variety of facility systems such as mechanical, electrical, building systems, and other critical systems.
  • Since Plumbers, usually work on their own, it is vital they be self-motivated, hardworking, and dependable.
  • Maintaining current plumber license or identification card to meet governmental regulations.
  • Maintain a safe and secure working environment.
  • Maintain and create Activity Hazard Analysis
  • Keep records of all maintenance and repair work conducted.
  • Assist others as part of the maintenance team as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which may include Safety and Quality Control which may require additional training.
Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements:
  • Must hold a current journeyman plumber State License or have passed the Journeyman Plumber exam in accordance with Kansas State requirements (www.kansas.gov).
  • At least four (4) years of experience in commercial plumbing work.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and job specifications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various departments in order to coordinate repairs.
  • Must be able to pass background
  • Must have Valid Driver License and maintain a good driving record.

Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., squat, bend, stoop and kneel for short periods, climb a ladder, stand for long periods of time, constant arm extensions.
  • Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, but none to the point of being disagreeable.
  • This job is mission essential personnel and will be needed to work as required.
