The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to advancing labor research and education for workplace justice. Through the work of its units – UCLA Labor Center, Human Resources Roundtable, and the Labor Occupational Safety and Health program – the Institute forms wide-ranging research agendas that carry UCLA into the Los Angeles community and beyond. Position Summary
The IRLE Communications Specialist will increase the visibility of the UCLA's Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) projects on labor research, education and engagement for workplace justice. The Communications Specialist must be a strong, experienced writer and also possess a variety of skills including: graphic design, social media management, public relations, print production, photography/videography and virtual event production and management. The Communications Specialist will collaborate with the IRLE communications team and its units to implement and strengthen communications plans that advance the missions of the institute's respective projects, producing timely promotional materials across digital and print platforms and providing publications support for institute news and research report releases. The Communications Specialist will also support the implementation of an institute-wide communications plan. The Communications Specialist will build relationships with traditional/earned media and place stories, with an emphasis on raising the profile of IRLE and its unit worker issues as they relate to current local and statewide policies. The Communications Specialist must be highly motivated and possess strong writing and design capabilities, sound news judgment, the ability to handle numerous communications campaigns at once, and the flexibility to adjust their workflow according to the IRLE's needs. Two Years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required) Two Years experience working with diverse communities or social justice organizations. (Required) Two Years experience using various social media platforms and knowledge of social media engagement strategies. (Preferred) Two Years experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress or other content management system and Constant Contact. (Preferred) Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to convey information in a clear, concise way, synthesizing information and presenting it to others. (Required) Demonstrated ability to write and edit clear, engaging, and grammatically correct content. (Required) Creative thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems. (Required) Strong visual eye. (Required) Proven skill at working in a collective environment, including interpersonal skills to interact sensitively with colleagues, students, community members, and workers from diverse social, cultural, and educational backgrounds. (Required) Strong attention to detail. (Required) Demonstrated skill developing relationships with and pitching news stories to local, state and national media outlets and publications. (Required) Fearlessness in learning new software independently. (Required) Graphic design and photography skills and multimedia production.
