Senior Mechanical Engineer, Packaging Innovation, MSP
Amazon, Westborough, Massachusetts, us, 01581
Description
The Mechanical Engineer designs automated packaging platforms and supporting systems to enable faster and more efficient delivery to Amazon's customers.
The primary role of the Mechanical Engineer is to provide technical ownership and refinement of the packaging platforms and automation systems. Working with the Electrical and Controls teams, the Mechanical Engineer will execute the design and manufacturing of Amazon's in-house packaging machinery and automation.
Utilizing MSP’s packaging machinery & automation platforms and modules, the Mechanical Engineer in conjunction with the Electrical and Controls Engineers will execute project / platform design evolution and execution enabling the manufacturing of Amazon’s in-house packaging machinery and automation. Co-located with our electrical and controls engineers, packaging designers and materials scientist this role will execute the design duties to ensure that Amazon’s packaging machinery and supporting automation is simple, effective and delivers lower total cost while enabling more sustainable packaging, streamlined supply chains and lower total cost of ownership.
Key job responsibilities
Collaborate with cross-functional engineers to design and execute packaging machinery and automation projects
Execute the mechanical design workstreams encompassing the core module evolution, structural member design including the modular frame, safety/guarding, and incorporation ancillary systems at the project / platform level while ensuring the technical, cost and timeline objectives are achieved
Deliver engineering workstreams including drive system modeling, load and bearing calculations, static and dynamic torque simulations and analysis, 3D and 2D model design including the mechanical BOM generation
Execute the detailed design evolution of modules and subsystems for material specifications, geographic requirements and continuous improvement goals aligned with MSP’s platform and project level initiatives
Partner with the Electrical Engineering, ensure project documentation is complete and scalable for electrical schematics, BOM, I/O’s and subsystem programs
Support the project team in the safety certification of the project / platform (CE, UL, CSA, TUV, etc..)
About the team
Aligning mechatronics and packaging into one organization, (Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging, MSP) enables Amazon to develop, deploy and scale automated solutions across the Amazon Fulfillment Network, especially from Pick to SLAM for the Automated Robotics Sortable (ARS) network. This group works backwards from deep customer insights to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into brownfield and greenfield deployments with safety as a top priority. In addition, Sustainable Packaging solutions are a thread that impacts and connects all parts of the Amazon Stores supply chain and customer experience. They take ownership for the entire packaging experience including selling partner design, first/middle/last mile and total customer experience. They eliminate waste and packaging wherever possible. Where Amazon added packaging is required, they are transitioning from single-use plastics to curbside recyclable paper-based materials.
Basic Qualifications
Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
BA in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering
8+ years packaging machinery design experience
Proficiency in 3D design and simulation software including but not limited to Ansys, Creo, Catia, Solidworks
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
Experience with the project management of technical projects
PLM, GD&T, and manufacturing process knowledge
Understanding of packaging machinery safety standards
Operations experience in a manufacturing environment
Advanced simulation expertise
