R&D Mechatronics Engineer, Packaging Innovation, MSP

Amazon, Westborough, Massachusetts, us, 01581

Description

The R&D Mechatronics Engineer creates automated packaging platforms and supporting systems to enable faster and more efficient delivery to Amazon's customers.

The primary role of the R&D Mechatronics Engineer is to work on the conceptualization and technical development of next-generation packaging platforms and supporting automation systems. This involves designing, simulating, and building packaging machinery and automation that simplifies the fulfillment network, reduces delivery times, and exceeds customer packaging expectations.

Key job responsibilities

Conceptualize, develop, and simulate new packaging machinery and automation designs

Execute the electrical design workstreams encompassing the panel design, motor & drive sizing, electrical load calculations, system I/O architecture and layout, wireway placement and design, safety/guarding, and incorporation ancillary systems at the project / platform level while ensuring the technical, cost and timeline objectives are achieved

Deliver engineering workstreams including panel design and layout, power calculations, safety analysis and compliance with appropriate regulations (UL, CSA, CE, etc..) electrical schematics, electrical hardware selection including HMI, PLC, servo axis controllers and drives, VFD’s and I/O racks

Partner with with the Mechanical Engineering member(s), ensure project documentation is complete and scalable for electrical schematics, BOM, I/O’s and subsystem programs

Support the project team in the safety certification of the project / platform (CE, UL, CSA, TUV, etc..)

Monitor and leverage new technologies to improve functionality

About the team

Aligning mechatronics and packaging into one organization, (Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging, MSP) enables Amazon to develop, deploy and scale automated solutions across the Amazon Fulfillment Network, especially from Pick to SLAM for the Automated Robotics Sortable (ARS) network. This group works backwards from deep customer insights to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into brownfield and greenfield deployments with safety as a top priority. In addition, Sustainable Packaging solutions are a thread that impacts and connects all parts of the Amazon Stores supply chain and customer experience. They take ownership for the entire packaging experience including selling partner design, first/middle/last mile and total customer experience. They eliminate waste and packaging wherever possible. Where Amazon added packaging is required, they are transitioning from single-use plastics to curbside recyclable paper-based materials.
