DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Botanic Garden is a unit within the Division of Finance, Operations and Administration. Our division includes a broad and diverse set of operational units whose team members work daily to support the core mission of UC Santa Cruz to advance excellence in teaching, research, and service.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability, the Executive Director provides leadership for the Arboretum & Botanic Garden at UC Santa Cruz. The Executive Director manages staff, budgets, philanthropic and capital development, collections, grounds, educational programs, and retail operations.
JOB DUTIES
50% - Arboretum Leadership
- Provide leadership, guidance and oversight of the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum.
20% - Management
- Manage staff; responsible for performance management of staff members.
20% - Collections Management and Care
- Oversee operations of the gardens in accordance with best industry practices.
10% - Education, Interpretation and Outreach
- Develop and participate in educational programming at or sponsored by the Arboretum.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in public garden management, non-profit management, botany, horticulture, ecology, landscape architecture, or related fields.
- Experience in horticultural activities.
- Experience developing, tracking, and staying within budgets.
- Experience managing staff.
- Experience in fundraising.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in a related discipline
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
