Position Purpose:

Under the direction of the Central Lending Manager, the Mortgage Loan Officer (MLO) is responsible for generating funded mortgage loan volume from the real estate market and for promoting University of Hawaii Federal Credit Union to the local housing industry (community development, real estate agents, title companies, etc.) and the Credit Union’s membership. The MLO’s goal is to advise members and help them in reaching their financial goal by responsibly advising them throughout the mortgage loan process.

Essential Functions:

Meet with prospective mortgage loan borrowers on the phone and in person, advising and guiding them throughout the entire loan process. Conducts interviews to determine their ability to qualify for residential mortgage products and provide guidance to applicants on other UHFCU products and services that might benefit. Counsels applicants regarding credit decisions, including loan denials. Assists to identify, recommend, or negotiate alternative loan requirements, funding and/or loan structure solutions for difficult or denied loan files. Originate mortgage loan applications with an informed and proactive approach to understand applicant needs, provide professional guidance on financing options, and help members through the application and origination process to ensure a smooth loan experience for the applicants. Responsible for self-generation of lead flow and mortgage origination activities consistent with service experience expectations and production goals. Continually identifies, develops, and maintains a quality network of business relationships that serves as a recurring source of referrals for new mortgage lending opportunities. A MLO’s network may consist of real estate professionals, as well as other valuable referral sources and is enhanced by the MLO’s regular participation in business related development opportunities and community efforts. Accountable for execution of mortgage sales and marketing initiatives and effective pipeline management practices to meet successful closing deadlines. Maintain appropriate confidentiality of all member information. Maintain strong member service ratings (Net Promoter Scores). Performs other duties as required.

Ensures exceptional member service by maintaining thorough knowledge of lending programs, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, demonstrating a commitment to professional ethics, and complying with all Federal and State compliance policies. Comply with all department and company policies, procedures, and regulations. Supports a positive environment of productive teamwork and collaboration. Contributes to the success of the department and credit union objectives and goals. Participates in business related development opportunities, and community efforts to promote the UHFCU brand as a home financing provider of choice by encompassing company culture and core values. Ability to make sound decisions regarding member transactions weighing member service issues with credit union’s exposure to loss or fraud.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in work experience.

Required Knowledge:

Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet or similar software) with the ability to learn and adapt to specialized loan software.

Experience Required:

Must have a minimum of 3 years of current residential real estate lending sales experience.

Strong knowledge of current real estate and consumer lending laws and regulations.

Recent experience with mortgage loan origination and automated underwriting systems.

Registration with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and & Registry

Credit union industry experience a plus.

Skills/Abilities:

Excellent communication skills including effective listening, written composition, problem solving, and tact in dealing with internal and external members, third party vendors and colleagues.

Demonstrated ability to conduct basic and complex loan document needs assessments, identify problems, and exercise sound judgment.

Proven ability to learn information quickly and maintain composure under pressure in a complex, high production, structured environment.

Must be reliable and dependable in meeting deadlines.

Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and to prioritize tasks and adapt to a wide range of job responsibilities.

Sedentary work (sitting most of the time). Able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.

Reasoning Ability:

Able to apply common sense understanding to carry-out detailed instructions and to deal with problems involving variables.

Mathematics Ability:

Able to perform basic math skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using a calculator.

Language Ability:

Able to write complex sentences using normal word order with present and past tenses, as well as a command of the English vocabulary.

Working Conditions:

Air-conditioned, smoke-free office setting.

Business Hours:

Monday through Saturday. Business hours are subject to change. Must be able to work additional hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
