DESCRIPTION
Supervises and/or participates in the installation, maintenance and repair of all electrical wiring, apparatus, traffic control systems, fixtures, motors, industrial instruments, and other equipment under the jurisdiction of the city; performs related work as required.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and use hands to finger, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. (Maximum employer match is capped at 10% for both the DB & DC. DB is always funded first). Employee contributions are 100% vested. Insurance Benefits: The City of Flint offers medical insurance (HAP and BCBS of Michigan), dental and vision to eligible employees, their spouses, and qualified dependents. Life & AD&D and short-term disability are available for free to eligible employees after six months of employment. The City of Flint offers a $100 per month opt-out payment for any employee who has other insurance coverage through a spouse or former employer and chooses not to take the City's medical insurance.
Eligible employees can also enroll in flexible spending accounts for both medical and dependents. They have immediate access to the full amount selected while paying back that amount with pre-tax payroll deductions over the following year.
City of Flint eligible employees also participate in an HCSP plan for future retiree health care costs. Employees contribute $600 pre-tax yearly ($23.08 each pay they work and/are paid 40 hours regular wages) and the employer matches $1500 yearly ($57.70 each pay they work and/are paid 40 hours regular wages). This plan is available for use after termination of employment. (The employer match is vested 20% each year and 100% vested after 5 years.)

DESCRIPTION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises and participates in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of wiring systems, electrical motors, transformers, wiring, conduit, lighting fixtures, electrical control devices, meters, electronic timing control and electrically operated devices.
- Supervises and assists in erecting signal poles and boxes, string cables and wires, splices and repairs underground and overhead lines.
- Installs and maintains motors, meters and generators, dresses, and polishes commutators, seats and replaces brushes; performs complex conduit bending operations; does other electrical work and some mechanical work in repairing and replacing parts.
- Installs, inspects, repairs, and maintains all metering controls, recorders, venturi meters, orifice meters, ring balance meters, magnetic flow meters, sludge density electronic meters, laboratory equipment, and other electronic equipment.
- Makes emergency repairs and adjustments; locates and clears short circuits.
- Cleans, maintains, installs, and repairs battery systems, emergency electrical generator systems and high voltage generation systems.
- Maintains stock of electrical fittings, wire and conduit and instruments as required.
- Keeps necessary records of service and repairs of assigned equipment.
- Answers service calls on a 24-hour basis.
- At least four years of practical experience in industrial or commercial electrical construction or maintenance
ORAt least four years in a combination of practical experience and training in industrial or commercial electrical construction or maintenance at a recognized trade or technical school. (The combination MUST include a minimum of one year's practical experience) - Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools and equipment of the trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards and precautionary methods peculiar to the trade.
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
- Ability to work from drawings and specifications and to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Skill in the use of tools and in the operation of equipment of the trade.
- Skill in locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.
- Ability to meet the physical, mental, and visual standards of the job.
- Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety to one's self, other persons and equipment.
- Ability to coordinate assignments and work with other trades.
