Position Summary

Install, maintain, modify and repair high and low-voltage single and multi-phase transmission, distribution, lighting, communication, control and alarm systems, fixtures and components in City-owned buildings, facilities and grounds; troubleshoot problems in electrical systems and components and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

High school diploma or GED; and

Five (5) years electrical experience at the journey level.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.
Possession of a valid New Mexico Residential and Commercial Electrical (EE-98J) Journeyman license.
Preferred Knowledge

  • Principles, practices and theories of electricity
  • Installation and maintenance of electrical systems, telemetry cables, circuitry, generators and related materials
  • Methods and techniques of troubleshooting electrical system malfunctions
  • Methods and techniques of maintaining, installing and repairing electrical systems and equipment
  • Techniques of troubleshooting large motor, circuit breakers, panels and a variety of other electrical equipment failures
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations
Preferred Skills & Abilities
  • Perform installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment
  • Perform troubleshooting of electrical system malfunctions
  • Read, interpret and follow blue prints and drawings
  • Coordinate assigned electrical projects with department heads
  • Direct the work of assigned project staff
  • Use a variety of voltage meters and testers
  • Operate a variety of electrical repair, maintenance and installation equipment and vehicles in a safe and effective manner
  • Effectively communicate with communications tower
  • Set up and wire controls for motors, pumps and systems as needed
  • Pull wires, hang lighting fixtures and install control equipment according to codes
  • Perform all necessary work on multi-phase power circuits
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
