Job Summary

Through subordinate Directors, oversees the application of advanced project management frameworks and methods and campus, medical center or Office of the President objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Determines methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Manages projects of broad and diverse scope, size, impact, budget and / or project team size, with considerable impact to the organization. Projects may be passed off to the owners to implement and maintain. Requires level of expertise in project management such as project management certificate and / or quality improvement processes like Six Sigma or Lean or equivalent project management experience.

The VP will be responsible for the following:

  • Create a program management and change management system at UCSF Health to implement its strategic priorities, both systemwide and in individual units
  • Oversees through subordinates management of a highly sophisticated project management process for products and services with broad medical center, institution-wide and / or multi-institutional scope. Oversees the application of advanced project management concepts with a full understanding of project management practices and policies and procedures to manage complex projects. Provides analysis and status tracking for highly complex, project-related issues.
  • Advises the Health System Chief Strategy Officer on establishing organizational strategic plans and objectives through reporting on the operational and financial business case behind proposed programmatic changes.
  • Makes long-term strategic decisions on project implementation that reflect upon the organization as a whole, and may be emulated at other UC locations.
  • Conceptualizes and implements initiatives to advance the vision of UCSF Health's CEO, CSO, and other executives, including researching and drafting communications, speeches, and presentations.
  • Interacts with senior management on controversial situations, customer negotiations, or influencing and persuading other senior level managers.
  • Stays well-informed and keeping abreast of higher education current and emerging issues in order to provide the Chancellor or CEO broad perspective across the organization
  • Leads and / or participates in organizational design and changes within and across divisions; ensures efficient re-structuring of work and staffing; assembling and directing project teams to provide the advice and resources in planning and implementation stages (HR, OD, Legal, Facilities, Budget, etc.).
  • Provides organization-wide influence on the identification and framing of systemic issues, and the formulation and advancement of approaches to address them.
  • Negotiates directly to achieve solutions with high level stakeholders such as faculty, senate committee chairs, senior administrators, other UC locations, Office of the President, public agencies and the community to develop solutions to complex problems; providing briefings on current and emerging issues.
  • Provides guidance and expertise in program management and change management to UCSF Health management in developing techniques and processes.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.

The salary range for this position is $262,200 - $552,200 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or related experience/training.
  • Advanced knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Excellent consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills.
  • Excellent ability to establish mission and goals at the macro-level; to lead subordinate management to develop goals in alignment with mission.
  • Sophisticated leadership abilities to establish department goals, and motivate and influence others to achieve.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts
  • Broad knowledge of initiatives and an understanding of impact to the organization of such initiatives.
  • Demonstrated capacity to anticipate location specific obstacles and plan for contingencies.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to determine relevance and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated advanced organization and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated advanced effective writing skills. Advanced knowledge of all aspects of communications. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with all levels of an organization.
  • Demonstrated competency in selecting and implementing project management methods and techniques
  • Proven leadership ability. Experience leading a team of professionals preferred. Effective problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to put forth persuasive arguments.
  • Effective skill at tracking effort and project progress. Advanced organization and project management skills. Demonstrated strong conceptual and planning skills to analyze projects of broad and diverse scope. Understands the cost impact of projects, project tracking tools and metrics.
  • Experience analyzing complex projects with broad impact. Ability to manage project progress within time and budget constraints.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate critical information across disciplines. Understands how projects relate to other business strategies and initiatives.
