Position Summary

Acuren is currently recruiting for a Materials Engineer Senior to support our operations in Hayward, CA.

Responsibilities

The Materials Engineer Senior reports to and works closely with the Technical Director and experienced technicians on a dynamic mix of technical project management, laboratory analysis and customer interaction. They are responsible for conducting metallurgical failure analyses on a variety of alloys for a variety of industries, and for providing technical expertise for clients and junior engineering staff.

  • Collect technical information from clients, prepare work scopes and deliver cost estimates
  • Coordinate performance of lab work including digital photography, sample sectioning, metallographic specimen preparation, optical, digital, and scanning electron microscopy, hardness testing, chemical analysis, and mechanical testing
  • Provide high-level interpretation of metallurgical data, particularly on characterization of microstructures and fractography
  • Develop reports for clients based on laboratory data and technical expertise
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineer staff, including reviewing of reports
  • Provide expert witness testimony in a court of law, if required
Requirements
  • Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or similar discipline, MSc or PhD is a bonus
  • Minimum 10 years of metallurgical failure analysis and forensic engineering experience.
  • Hands-on experience with common metallurgical laboratory equipment and instruments including stereoscopes, optical metallograph, scanning electron microscope, and various hardness testers.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with specifying and analyzing laboratory mechanical tests including tensile, compression, Charpy impact and bend tests.
  • Familiarity with inorganic chemical analysis techniques including optical emission spectroscopy (OES), wavelength x-ray fluorescence (WXRF), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communications skills.

    As per applicable state law the job posting pay range is $72,600.00 - $113,200.00 annually depending on experience and applicable certifications.
