No Job Duties General Description The student assistant will serve as receptionist and help ensure the smooth operation of the Office of Student Engagement. Duties include greeting visitors and assisting them, answering the phone in a friendly and professional manner, taking messages and distributing to the appropriate person, assisting with OrgSync (the online management system for student organizations), picking up and distributing mail, making copies, sending faxes, and other clerical duties as assigned. Essential Job Functions 40% Greeting and assisting students, faculty, staff, and the Lamar Community 50% Answering the phone, taking and distributing messages 10% Pick up and distribute mail, make copies, fax, and perform other clerical duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications Candidate must be a registered student at Lamar University. Must be a junior or senior undergraduate student. Student must maintain a 2.50 GPA and be in good standing with the university. Work requires a broad knowledge of the university community, policies, and resources. Students must be of good character and represent Lamar in a positive way. Students will receive on-the-job training in a variety of areas. No degree is required for this position. Experience Required Students will receive on-the-job training in a variety of areas. Prefer the student to be skilled in Microsoft Office Suite . Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Effective customer service, communication, and people skills with students, staff, administrators, parents, and any other inquirers that contact the office Ability to work as a member of a team Good written and oral communication skills Have excellent telephone etiquette Must be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment Have a broad knowledge of the Lamar University campus Work may require contact with upper-level personnel, and the student should be able to conduct themselves professionally and be able to converse and interact with ease Ability to deal effectively and courteously with individuals of diverse backgrounds Ability to maintain client confidentiality at all times Good listening skills when recording messages for accuracy Ability to use a multi-function copy machine and fax machine Skilled in Microsoft Office Physical Requirements Physical Requirements Sedentary, sitting most of the time, but must able to walk to various departments around campus. Essential functions or requirements listed above may not include all related duties that might be requested and/or performed. Certifications Required Work Hours 19.5 hours/week, preferably split evenly among five days. Strongly prefer candidate who can cover lunch hours. Job Conditions The job conditions are mainly working the front desk in a team-oriented office environment dedicated to the support of our students at Lamar. The office is often quiet and sometimes moderately busy with students and visitors to greet. A small portion of the job requires running errands on campus.
