The Chicago-Kent College of Law Library seeks an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented law librarian as the Head of Access and Technical Services. The Head of Access and Technical Services reports to the Director of the Law Library. This position has administrative and supervisory responsibilities and collaborates with other law librarians to develop, provide, and expand library services for students and faculty. The position is full-time and available immediately.
The Chicago-Kent College of Law Library in the Conviser Law Center is located in downtown Chicago, one of the largest legal markets in the country. The Law Library advances the academic and scholarly success of students and faculty by providing future-focused training and professional research assistance to a diverse community.
COMMUNICATIONS
Strong written and verbal communication skills required. The ability to explain complex procedures clearly and effectively is essential. Must communicate effectively, yet diplomatically, with all library users, including students, faculty, and all staff levels. Demonstrated ability to stay current with library trends and technology is essential.

Special Schedule Requirements
Generally, Monday – Friday. However, the schedule includes occasional evening and weekend hours to meet the needs of a class, extended exam schedules, or serve as backup coverage for the Library’s service hours. The position offers a limited hybrid work schedule.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
Required:
MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited graduate program.
Minimum of three years experience as a professional librarian in a cataloging role or technical services role.
Minimum of one year experience supervising professional or paraprofessional library staff.
Preferred:
Experience in an academic, research, or law library setting.
Knowledge & Skills
Required:
Working knowledge of an integrated library system and experience effectively using and managing acquisition and cataloging functions.
Working knowledge of current metadata standards such as MARC, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and other emerging standards.
Experience cataloging physical and electronic materials using a cataloging utility such as OCLC or other shared data repository.
Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and manage library staff.
Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities, show initiative and flexibility, and thrive in a changing environment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
Excellent organizational, time management, and analytical skills.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated strong work ethic and commitment to excellent patron service.
Willingness to learn and grow professionally.
Preferred:
Experience using ALMA.
Experience working in a library consortia environment with a networked catalog.
SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY
Supervises library assistants and student workers.
Works with the Library Director on the annual budget and is responsible for the timely payment of vendor invoices.
Physical Environment and Requirements
The office work environment requires standing, sitting at a computer, and light lifting of books.

Key Responsibilities
- Oversees technical services and access services within the Law Library. Establishes and monitors workflows related to acquisitions, cataloging, online shared university catalog maintenance, circulation, reserves, and I-Share and interlibrary loans. Ensures database integrity supporting these functions by staying up-to-date with new features and best practices. Oversees the Library’s physical spaces.
Percentage Of Time: 35 - Trains, supervises, and directs the daily activities of full-time library assistants and student employees. Sets priorities and goals and provides training to ensure that staff can effectively meet the requirements of their jobs.
Percentage Of Time: 30 - Oversees and participates in the ongoing maintenance and quality control of acquisitions and cataloging records. Supports the delivery of digital resources through the Library’s integrated library system using vendor-supplied records. Provides metadata support to the Law Library’s institutional repository.
Percentage Of Time: 25 - Participates in library planning and policymaking. Compiles data and prepares analytical reports as necessary. Serves on the university-wide Alma/Primo working group. Other duties as assigned.
