THE ROLE The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the activities of the City’s finance division and works to ensure the accurate and timely creation of financial records. The individual in this position will primarily focus on the areas of cash receipting, utility billing and customer support, and processing accounts payable/accounts receivable invoices. The Staff Accountant is also responsible for daily banking activities, monthly account reconciliations and journal entries, and various other financial reporting activities. Prepares and performs monthly bank reconciliations; prepares month end balance sheet reconciliations. Prepares monthly journal entries; prepares monthly account analysis for various general ledger accounts. Manages the operations of the City’s utility billing and customer service activities including generating bi-monthly utility bills, resolving billing and cash receipt posting issues, collecting water usage data, and importing into utility billing software. Assists with year-end close including year-end audit; ensures processes and financial record keeping is in compliance with generally accepted accounting standards. Participates in the annual budget process and collaborates with department and division leaders to meet deadlines and make recommendations; prepares variance analysis for Senior Leader review. Prepares monthly statements and visual reports that summarize data, information, and trends to support decision making; analyzes financial data and information to identify trends, recognize problems, and recommend improvements. Assists the Director of Finance with the preparation and filing of sales tax returns; oversees annual tax collection, reconciliation, and settlement with the municipality. QUALIFICATIONS What does it take to succeed in this role? We’re looking for a motivated individual with excellent attention to detail and a willingness to learn. You should also have: Associates degree in Accounting or equivalent experience Two (2) or more years of experience in a broad-based accounting related position, municipal/public sector experience preferred Valid Wisconsin driver’s license is required Previous experience with ClearGov budgeting software and Civic/Caselle Connect software is preferred WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER The City of Port Washington offers an excellent benefits package, including inclusion in the state WRS pension plan, and ample opportunities for professional development.
