The Office of Information Technology (OIT) develops and maintains mission-critical applications for the University of Minnesota. The MIDB Technology Architect leads, designs and coordinates resources across Health Sciences Technology (HST) and the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain (MIDB) to drive implementation and maintenance of research systems. This role will establish estimates and explore solutions that serve the immediate needs of a project or researcher, while accounting for long term strategic impacts across health sciences research entities and highly complex studies across collaborating institutions and partners. This role will stay current with technology trends and health sciences research priorities to inform future capabilities. The MIDB Technology Architect is a key control point for interpreting, implementing and maintaining security processes and controls in accordance with SPA, clinical research partners, privacy and security leaders.
Responsibilities: Architecture and Design (60% time) Lead the design of database and clinical research data warehouse structures in support of grant strategies and objectives across the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain (MIDB). Lead the design of data flows between systems, including the creation and maintenance of design documents for complex system interactions and flows. Work with external partners and University research leaders to architect new clinical data flows in support of research. Work with Data Engineering & ETL staff and manager to design scalable, extensible, and maintainable software and hardware solutions supporting research & administrative workflows. Interface, consult, and coordinate with Server Operations personnel and experts to instantiate conceptual designs consistent with relevant policies and procedures. Research and select tools, products, and frameworks as necessary to support business initiatives. Work with third-party vendors, clinical data partners, and collaborating institution architects and IT personnel to achieve research study design goals, including serving as lead architect for groups charged with these responsibilities. Serve as an expert resource on full-stack implementations and full-lifecycle operations, including archiving and de-identification processes and strategies. Perform architectural trade-off analyses that consider institutional grant posturing and workplace culture in addition to technical qualities of the systems or workflows being considered. Leadership/Guidance (15% time) Interact with and provide technical leadership to other team members and clients to analyze source system data to understand the data structure, definitions, and anomalies. Mentor other team members in database design and development. Create proof of concept solutions as a template for team members on which to iterate and from which production systems are to be based Work with other HST architects and systems staff to help align practices and workflows with a goal of increasing efficiency, transparency, and process reproducibility. Relationship Management (15%) Bring technical expertise to research infrastructure collaborations across MIDB, the University, and work with external research partners. Responsibly shepherd institutional and research grant budgets by recommending and designing systems to produce publishable, innovative results at minimal cost. Listen for, seek out, and engage with researchers and research workflows across the institution to promote research velocity through the adoption and adaptation of emerging technologies and innovative architectural styles and systems design. Other (10% time) Support existing applications and databases and serve as a resource for customer questions and problem resolution. Other duties as assigned. *Please Document Qualifications On Resume* Required Qualifications BA/BS plus at least four years of experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of experience. Experience in full-stack development, database management systems (e.g., SQL), and data warehousing. Experience in technology architecture, database design, and data flow management. Relevant work experience with security processes and control with clinical research and privacy standards. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in research, sponsored projects, and/or higher education. Experience working in academic medicine, facilitating clinical research across health systems and university research systems, providing architectural guidance and leveraging institutional resources. Related professional certifications including AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
