DIVISION CHIEF, INFECTIOUS DISEASES (ASSOCIATE/FULL PROFESSOR) (T/TE/NTE)

This is an exceptional opportunity for a transformative leader to help grow our presence and impact in Southern Arizona and beyond; promote patient care through state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapeutics; expand an already strong cohort of faculty, fellows, students, and staff; augment and expand basic and translational research and clinical trial activities; and further strengthen the tripartite mission of the Department and College of Medicine. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Medicine, the incumbent will work collaboratively with leadership across the department and college, along with our clinical partner, Banner Health, the fourth largest non-profit healthcare system in the U.S., with mission of achieving excellence in clinical care, education, and both individual and team-based research. Duties & Responsibilities The Chief of Infectious Diseases will provide leadership, oversight, and management of day-to-day operations of the Division of Infectious Diseases, reporting to the Chair of the Department of Medicine. The Chief of Infectious Diseases is responsible for recruitment, management, compensation, and retention of faculty in consideration of UA, UAHS, College, and B-UMG strategic plans and initiatives in balance of the tripartite mission of the University. The Chief Infectious Diseases will collaborate with Academic Affairs and other educational offices at the College to ensure the department and their faculty are advancing the mission of the medical student, graduate student, and graduate medical education teaching programs. The Chief is responsible for maintaining a liaison with other clinical and/or basic science departments to foster an integrated teaching environment for the College. The Chief of Infectious Diseases is responsible for encouraging and supporting research creativity and productivity within the department, across the College and UAHS, and with the College’s key partners. The Chief of Infectious Diseases will provide leadership oversight and effective management of an active program of independent, extramurally funded basic, translational, or clinical research in their area of research expertise/specialization. The Chief of Infectious Diseases is the clinical role model and leader of the department’s clinical activities. The Chief works with the Dean, Department Head, and the B-UMG CEO to coordinate the clinical activities of the department. The Chief is responsible for maintaining appropriate standards of care appropriate to the discipline. The Chief of Infectious Diseases will provide direct patient care in the inpatient and/or ambulatory (outpatient) setting as a licensed and fully credentialed provider and member of Banner-University Medical Group. The Chief of Infectious Diseases is responsible for ensuring the fiscal accountability and sustainability of the division and center. The Chief of Infectious Diseases is responsible for encouraging and supporting diversity among the division’s constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, and acceptance and work in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Minimum Qualifications MD, DO, or equivalent. Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine/Medical Subspecialties and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona. Three (3) years progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting is expected for an Associate Professor rank and five (5) years is expected for a Full Professor rank. Demonstrated track record of distinction in teaching, clinical care, and/or research in an academic department of medicine or equivalent environment. Demonstrated commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments, and specialties. Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students. Record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, measure and improve productivity and outcomes, and undertake appropriate business strategies to achieve division, unit department and/or enterprise goals. If the individual selected for employment does not currently hold a faculty title with The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson, they will be required to obtain faculty status. This will include obtaining letters of recommendation and review by the appropriate College review committee. Preferred Qualifications Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS, etc.). Experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services. Demonstration of outstanding leadership in a major subspeciality division/section at a (NIH-funded) department of internal medicine. Established and continuing independent NIH-funded sponsored research portfolio and/or evidence of scientific research, including peer-reviewed articles and extramural funding. Demonstrated experience in academic program development, assessment, program review, and accreditation. Demonstrated experience in fundraising and community outreach. Demonstrated experience in creating research opportunities and enabling cutting-edge clinical trials. Demonstrated experience in developing collaborative programs.
