Position Description The Department of English at the University of Washington, located on the unceded land and waters of the Coast Salish peoples, invites applications for a full-time, Assistant Teaching Professor as core faculty in the Program for Writing Across Campus (PWAC) with affiliation with the Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR). PWAC is a discipline-linked writing program offering undergraduate writing seminars linked with lecture courses in disciplines such as Psychology, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, Biology, History, Anthropology, Music, Environmental Studies, International Studies, as well as a wide range of technical and professional communication courses. PWAC’s mission is to offer outstanding composition courses by centering community and collaboration, supporting teacher development, and creating partnerships across and beyond the university. Along with PWR, PWAC offers courses that satisfy the university’s composition requirement. The candidate will primarily teach PWAC composition courses linked to Social Science fields such as Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, Geography, and Integrated Social Sciences. They may also teach in other related fields, depending on program need and instructor interest. Moreover, the candidate will play a key role in program building and teacher development initiatives, particularly by expanding socially just, inclusive, and accessible teaching. Other anticipated job responsibilities may include: program assessment and administration; curriculum development, particularly with regard to teaching across modalities, accessible and equity-oriented pedagogies, and/or public or community-engaged teaching; supporting international and multilingual students’ writing; collaboration with other department and campus writing partners; mentorship of graduate student instructors; engagement in ongoing professional and teacher development; and/or service on departmental/campus committees. University of Washington teaching faculty engage in teaching, scholarship, and service. The successful candidate will promote a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students. This position will have an anticipated start date of September 2025, and is a full-time, 9-month, 3-year renewable (promotion eligible but not tenure-track) position. Length of renewal period increases with promotion rank. Washington State Law requires that this ad list a binding salary range. The base salary range for this position will be

$7,000 - $9,500 per month,

commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Qualifications Applicants should have by the start of the appointment a PhD, or foreign equivalent, in English, English Education, Rhetoric & Composition, Communication, Writing Studies, or a related field, with an emphasis in writing across/in the disciplines. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a record of innovative and effective teaching that centers language, racial equity, and identity; accessibility; social justice education; or closely related work. In addition to a record of innovative and effective teaching, candidates should have experience with student mentoring as well as active participation in departmental, university, and/or professional service.
