Job Description
What You Will Be Doing The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska, is seeking a highly motivated individual capable of using high-level computer languages and complex tools to provide application development support throughout the Division with a specific focus on the newly funded renewable energy program whose initial focus is to collect and analyze baseline data critical for evaluating the potential for hydro-electric (in-river) power generation throughout Alaska. This position is a 37.5 hours per week Analyst/Programmer 3 position.
Mission and Culture The DGGS mission is to determine the potential of Alaska land for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (AS 41.08.020). The Geologic Information Center (GIC) provides IT, GIS, and publications support for the Geologists, Scientists, and Engineers within DGGS. This position will reside within the GIC's IT group and provide application development support to the Division with a specific focus on the newly funded renewable energy program, whose initial focus is to collect and analyze baseline data critical for evaluating the potential for hydroelectric (in-river) power generation throughout Alaska. This position will be instrumental in organizing this data and making it available to the public via the DGGS online geoportal as web data services and customized web apps. In addition, this position will support priority software development projects throughout the Division.
Core Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to:
Design, develop, and document complex new applications or modify existing applications utilizing both compiled and interpreted programming languages, including but not limited to Javascript, HTML, Java, Python, Go (golang), and SQL. Design, develop, and document complex data storage systems in various formats, including PostgreSQL, Geodatabases (SQLite), and various flat files (JSON, CSV, etc.). Work comfortably in multiple environments and operating systems, including on-premises Linux and Windows machines, handheld devices running Android and iOS, and in the cloud. Interface with large-volume storage systems hosted on-premises and in the cloud, using S3-compatible data stores and large-volume file systems, such as Ceph, ZFS, and GlusterFS. Perform regular security audits and participate in code reviews of both new and existing code for quality assurance and educational purposes. Minimum Qualifications
Two years of computer programming experience in a recognized computer language. One year of this experience must have been in a business application, scientific application, microcomputer or computer information management support specialty.
Substitution:
A bachelor's degree with a major in Computer Science (CS) or Computer Information Systems (CIS), or a related degree with (18) semester/(24) quarter hours of CS or CIS may substitute for one year of the required experience. An associate's degree in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems may substitute for nine months of the required experience.

An applicant who is considered under the Substitution above qualifies to apply for this job class IF the applicable coursework is completed within three (3) months of hire. Under this option, an applicant may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of completion will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty.
