About the Position:

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Computer Systems Engineer Senior in our Information Technology Division (ITD) at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate will assist in overseeing the maintenance, administration, and further development of the Agency's server and system infrastructure supporting critical criminal justice applications; provide system support for enterprise servers running Solaris, Microsoft Server, VMware vSphere and other operating systems that requires 24 X 7 support; provide senior level support for: VSP's disk storage arrays with fiber channel connectivity, backup and archival strategy; and works with other software engineers to implement and manage operating system patches and upgrades; research, monitor and ensures stability of Windows/VMware/UNIX Server systems; lead engineering efforts and engages all stakeholders in capacity planning; evaluate vendor software; develop and prioritize a list of tactical and strategic initiatives for Windows/VMware environments; develop standards for Windows/VMware/UNIX Server environments; ensure system security; provide Engineering Manager with systems statistics; and positions Information Technology Engineering infrastructure for Cloud server migrations.

Minimum Qualifications •Considerable knowledge of VMware vSphere, Domain Name System (DNS), Lightweight Directory Protocol (LDAP), Web services, WebSphere, cable management, jumpstart technologies, Scripting and Java architecture. •Understanding of procedures and experience for backing up and restoring enterprise class servers; of Enterprise class servers, Windows Server, and VMware vSphere; of troubleshooting enterprise servers, VMware infrastructure and be familiar with performance tuning and monitoring; and of hardware/software is highly desirable: Windows Server 2016, 2019, and 2022, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), VMware vSphere, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Enterprise Backup solution (Netbackup), Fujitsu or NetApp SAN Storage hardware, Brocade switch, Quantum tape library, and X86 hardware platform. •In-depth experience with Windows operating systems and VMware Vsphere environments is required. •Background or training in Computer Science, Information systems, or equivalent experience. •In-depth experience with troubleshooting Windows Server, VMware and/or UNIX problems; with physical and logical concepts of Windows Server and/or UNIX file structures; and with Windows Server and/or UNIX scripting is required. •Thorough Knowledge of and experience with data security, backup, recovery, restart techniques, performance monitoring, system testing, and software patch Installation and testing; of data security, backup, recovery, and restart techniques; with standard networking protocols; with medium to large-scale Windows Server and/or UNIX environments; with Operating System (OS) upgrades, patch installation and testing; and with providing high level technical support is required. •High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Additional Considerations •Knowledge of Fujitsu servers is beneficial. •Exposure to Java and Web Services, and WebSphere, Cloud technologies is beneficial.
