Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

Duties & Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responds to all cardio-respiratory emergencies and/or needs for various respiratory therapies - assists in CPR Recommends Respiratory treatments and modalities as suggestions for the physicians' medical order as needed. Administers and monitors medical gas(including and especially oxygen) delivery systems Administers and evaluates aerosolized medications ordered by the physician on ventilator and non-ventilator patients. This will include nebulizers, MDI delivery with spacers, and DPI devices Manages patients in the Asthma Room, performs pre and post assessments for non-ventilator asthmatic patients - assesses breath sounds and measures peak flows. Initiates, monitors, adjust parameters on, and troubleshoots as necessary, departments ventilators BIPAPS, and Airvo Devices Obtains arterial blood gas samples for blood gas analysis. Performs blood gas analysis and related quality control functions. Interprets blood gas analysis, makes appropriate recommendations. Enters daily temperature and shift maintenance record in the ISTAT log Covers assigned areas of responsibility, Fosters teamwork among staff members, assisting and back-filling in assignments and responsibilities as necessary. Shows flexibility, and cooperation in helping fellow staff. Assists as necessary with intubations as well as bronchoscopies and managing the bronchoscopy equipment Places patient on End-Tidal CO2 monitors Performs airway and tracheal care Troubleshoots problems and reports to the supervisors

Minimum Qualifications

*Must be a graduate of an approved Respiratory Therapy Program

*Must be licensed by the New York State Education Department in Respiratory Therapy

*Must have a Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate

*Credential from the National Board of Respiratory Care is preferred.

*Associate degree or higher
