Job/Position Title:
Veterinary Technician
STATUS:

Primary Purpose : Provides routine health examinations and health maintenance for all animals sheltered at the Maui Humane Society and assists the veterinarians with surgery prep and support in our HQHV surgery clinic. Under the supervision of the Vet Tech Manager and Lead Techs. Medical duties under the supervision of the Chief Veterinarian (CV) and MHS DVM’s.
Assist veterinarians in treating and assessing shelter animals, including vaccinations, treatments, and lab work.
Provide routine health care for shelter animals, maintain treatment logs, and communicate with staff about health status.
Coordinate with staff on animal health needs and special care requirements.
Conduct monthly medical supply inventory, restock exam rooms, and manage medication levels.
Aid adopters and the public with health information, instruct volunteers, and offer excellent customer service.
Assist with euthanasia procedures for various animals.
Schedule spay/neuter appointments for adopted animals.
Support veterinarians during exams, ensuring proper animal restraint.
Prepare surgical suite, ensure paperwork and supplies are ready, and perform surgery examinations.
Identify high-risk surgeries and alert veterinarians.
Perform routine medical care under veterinarian supervision, including vaccinations and microchipping.
Administer sedation and anesthesia, monitor animals during surgery, and prepare surgical sites.
Maintain anesthesia equipment and assist in surgeries.
Assist veterinarians during surgery, including instrument familiarity and proper techniques.
Maintain accurate records of procedures and identify additional animal needs.
Perform routine dental cleanings and manage controlled drug logs.
Manage surgery inventory and prepare surgery paperwork.
Ensure cleanliness and readiness of surgery suite and equipment.
Provide pre-op and post-op instructions to the public.
Assist with end-of-life euthanasia procedures.
Ensure surgery room is clean and prepared for the next day.
Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas.
Present a positive image of the Maui Humane Society.
Support a positive working environment for the veterinary team.
Fulfill duties as an essential worker during emergencies.
Perform additional assigned duties as needed.
