The Montana Medical Laboratory Science (MMLS) Professional Program, housed within the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Montana State University, was developed in 2008 and is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). The program has been highly successful and has helped to alleviate the critical need for medical laboratory scientists in the state of Montana, especially in rural communities. Each year the program accepts approximately 18 students from Montana State University, the University of Montana, and Montana State University-Billings. In addition, it is affiliated with major hospitals and 26 rural hospitals throughout Montana where students participate in clinical laboratory training. Duties and Responsibilities: Manage all MMLS employees including: the Associate Director, faculty, teaching assistants, and student workers. Monitor and determine the MMLS budget. Collaborate with the Department Head to determine appropriate use of funds, wages/salaries of staff, etc. Oversee MMLS program communications with students, clinical affiliates, MMLS faculty, and educational coordinators at the hospital affiliates. Maintain all affiliate agreements with external training programs, campuses, and hospitals. Direct all activities associated with NAACLS accreditation – periodic reviews, annual report, 5–10-year self-study, site visit and accreditation documentation, and conduct surveys of employers and students. The position includes teaching laboratory and other courses directly relevant to the MMLS curriculum/options and developing and maintaining on-line curricular materials for the fall and spring semesters. Teaching duties also include coordinating student research projects, and lab simulation. Advising duties include: advising 40-60 students each semester, responding to ongoing student inquiries throughout the year, certifying students for graduation, new student orientations, and recruiting needs for the MMLS program. Oversee the Educational Laboratories, this includes: cooperating with media preparations staff, scheduling room requests for other programs and courses, and maintaining/acquiring bacterial and fungal cultures as required by these various lab courses. Coordinate with the Media Preparation Supervisor for purchase of supplies, small equipment, and large equipment. Secondary Duties: Manage the program application process, including participating in the selection process of 15 students for the next year’s class. Conduct site visits of students at the hospitals each fall and spring. Assist in the development of a Medical Laboratory Sciences Master’s Degree program proposal. Required Qualifications: Holds an ASCP - BOC or ASCPi – BOC generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Has a minimum of three years clinical experience in a clinical laboratory setting. Has a minimum of three years of teaching experience. Has earned a master’s or doctoral degree. Demonstrated leadership experience and professional service. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience in instruction and mentoring in a Medical Laboratory Sciences Program. Demonstrated program management experience, including budgeting. Have computer skills that would allow use of university-based on-line distance learning systems and other computer programs such as: PowerPoint, Word Processing, or Excel. The Successful Candidate Will: Have demonstrated outstanding communication skills and ability to work within a collaborative environment with various constituencies in a complex organization. Provide effective leadership and direction. Be driven to help develop and expand the MMLS Program. Develop and maintain professional relationships with outside interests. Position Special Requirements: Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If the successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)
