Under direction of the ShipCIS Manager, this position is responsible for managing the overall server cyberinfrastructure that supports the ships in the Scripps oceanographic research fleet. This includes overseeing management of the servers and services hosted on each individual ship, as well as directly managing systems at UC San Diego and in the cloud that provide shared services to the entire fleet. As needed, the ShipCIS Server Administrator assists with larger Scripps IT and other Scripps-led ship-based projects. The position performs in-depth analyses and implements solutions for highly complex issues in a number of technical areas: Administration of system management platforms such as Ansible and Intune; Management of several clusters of hypervisor platforms, Windows and Linux servers; Management of common storage, web, collaboration and printing services; Integration of user accounts with centralized identity and access management platforms; Management of network and firewall devices; Management of server and network log aggregation and analysis platforms. Note that the responsibilities of this position are focused on ShipCIS server infrastructure management, but expertise and occasional assistance with network infrastructure issues is required. In collaboration with Scripps IT, SOMTS and ITS staff, the position develops architecture reference designs that allow for the implementation of a shared cyberinfrastructure platform across all the Scripps ships. The ShipCIS Server Administrator also meets with colleagues from other ship operators in the Academic Research Fleet (ARF) to design and deploy infrastructure services that support common needs from different institutions. The ShipCIS Server Administrator works typically from shore but occasional travel to the ships is required to perform infrastructure equipment installation. As needed, the position will need to work irregular hours to resolve critical operations issues or assist with meeting shipyard, inspection and maintenance schedules for the ships. QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related scientific field and/or equivalent experience/training

Advanced knowledge of configuring and managing Windows and Linux server operating systems in support of a diverse userbase. Experience with client operating systems such as Windows 10 and 11, as well as recent versions of macOS.

Advanced experience with VMware and other virtualization hypervisors. This includes provisioning, performance tuning, and recovery. Experience with SAN/NAS technology, and HA configurations such as clustering, teaming, and load balancing.

Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to implement architecture designs via the automation of systems administration and configuration management tools. Extensive experience in the configuration of web, storage and collaboration services. Experience in the steps required to deploy web applications and troubleshoot advanced technical problems concerning the server environments.

Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions. Expert in cross-platform OS and application integration (Linux/Windows). Experience with system administration orchestration utilities such as Intune, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or Salt.

Experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Advanced programming and/or scripting skills in Python, Linux shell scripting and Powershell scripting languages.

Advanced knowledge of IP-based networking (TCP, UDP, ICMP). Knowledge of switch, router and firewall management using CIDR and VLAN configurations. Expterise with VPN tunneling at the host and network levels. Advanced knowledge of network troubleshooting tools such as ping and traceroute, and network activity monitoring tools such as Intermapper and Wireshark.

Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software. Extensive knowledge of common intrusion detection and prevention tools at the network and host layers. Familiarity with GPOs, Intune or other MDM platforms to configure and monitor security settings.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must pass a background check.

Must be able to obtain a U.S. passport.

Occasional travel required to domestic and foreign ports.

Some evenings and weekends required based on ships' activity.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $104,900 - $198,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $50.24 - $95.26 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
