The Microsoft Observability Platform and Experience engineering team is seeking a Principal Software Engineer - Observability Platform . The team is responsible for both the external and internal observability product offerings. These services enable customers to monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues with their services. Azure Monitor is our product family and includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, and more. Additionally, Log Analytics is the platform upon which Microsoft Sentinel is built. We have a multi-billion dollar business that is growing rapidly. We run some of the world’s highest scale observability services both for Microsoft internally and for our external customers, processing over 1 Exabyte of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics. As a high-level software engineer for the Observability team you will help design and build services in the Observability Platform to meet the future demands of increasingly complex workloads including those rapidly emerging from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations (AIOps). The Observability Platform plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and reliability of the products that Microsoft and our customers ship. Responsibilities Work with teams across Observability to design and build scalable, high-performance services that are highly reliable Lead by example in delivering high quality code that is maintainable, performant, testable and used across our services Mentor others to produce extensible and maintainable code Explore new areas and work on special projects to push the boundaries of Observability Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, advancements in service health, and identify opportunities for innovation Embody our culture and values Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Rust or Go OR equivalent experience Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, Rust, or Goo OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10 years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, Rust, or Goo OR equivalent experience Experience with high-scale distributed systems design and implementation Experience with microservices architecture, Kubernetes, Linux, Open Telemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and related technologies is a plus Coding, debugging, algorithm design and problem-solving skills AI/ML experience is a plus Experience with building observability systems is a plus Software Engineering IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
