The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a critical leadership role responsible for maintaining the fiscal health, sustainability, and compliance of the organization and its affiliate, Janian Medical Care P.C.. Reporting to the President and CEO, the CFO will collaborate with the executive team, board of directors, and staff to ensure the financial strength needed to fulfill the organization's mission of providing supportive housing and services. The CFO will work closely with the President and CEO to oversee all aspects of financial strategy, planning, and operations, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and goals.
This role requires a mission-driven professional with a strong working knowledge of city, state, and federal contractual and payment processes, significant expertise in nonprofit financial management, and experience in real estate financing to support future property development. The CFO will lead a finance team of 20, including a Controller and Director of Budgets, fostering a high-performance, collaborative environment that supports the organization's operational goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Strategic Oversight Serve as a strategic partner to the President and CEO, providing insights and recommendations to ensure fiscal health and alignment between financial strategies and organizational goals. Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and analysis, ensuring efficient processes that support both short- and long-term objectives. Develop and enhance financial systems to improve reporting, increase operational efficiency, and address financial risks Supervise the finance team, promoting a collaborative, accountable, and growth-oriented culture, ensuring staff have the tools and training needed for success. Drive cross-departmental collaboration to align financial strategies with programmatic priorities. Financial Operations and Compliance
Direct all financial operations, including contracts, budgets, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger management. Ensure timely, accurate financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders, including funders, partners, and the board of directors. Present quarterly updates and the annual budget to the executive team, board, and committees, tailoring communication to diverse financial expertise. Oversee compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, ensuring audits and reporting requirements are met with accuracy and transparency. Lead the annual audit process, maintain robust internal controls, and ensure proper safeguarding of organizational resources. Provide regular updates on financial performance, risks, and opportunities to the executive team and board, fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities. Evaluate and implement technology solutions to streamline financial reporting processes and improve overall operational efficiency, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry best practices. Real Estate Financing
Collaborates with the Property Development team and CUCS leadership to secure financing for property developments, acquisitions, and improvements, working with internal and external stakeholders (developers, lenders, government agencies, investors) to ensure alignment with the organization's fiscal and strategic goals. Evaluates financial models and conducts feasibility analyses to optimize funding opportunities, including tax credits, grants, and other relevant financial instruments. Ensures all real estate financial transactions comply with applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies, maximizing financial sustainability and supporting programmatic objectives. Collaborates on long-term property portfolio planning with internal teams and leadership to ensure alignment with programmatic needs and the organization's growth in the supportive housing sector. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field required; advanced degree (MBA, MPA, or equivalent) preferred. CPA strongly preferred. At least 10 years of senior financial leadership in a complex, multi-site nonprofit or government organization, with expertise in nonprofit financial management, audits, budgeting, risk management, and compliance with government funding requirements. Proven success in managing large-scale, cross-departmental initiatives and leading diverse teams. Strong understanding of government funding streams, payment processes, and real estate financing, with experience in property development preferred. Strategic thinker with exceptional leadership, team-building, and communication skills. Ability to inspire high-performing teams, tailor financial information to diverse audiences, and proactively address risks. Demonstrated customer service ethos and commitment to supporting staff in achieving organizational goals. Ability to travel to sites across Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn.
