POSITION DETAILS
New York City College of Technology (City Tech) of the City University of New York (CUNY), a comprehensive college in downtown Brooklyn offering associate and baccalaureate degrees, seeks a strategic leader to serve as the Performing Arts Center Director.
The City Tech Performing Arts Center/The Theater at City Tech is a catalyst in the continued transformation of Downtown Brooklyn through performance and the arts. Our facility strengthens our community presence, allowing us to expand our theatrical offerings, event conferences, CUNY student showcases, musical performances, and art exhibits, to function as a NYC election site and NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene testing site, and to serve as an accessible public space for commencement services, community arts productions, guest lectures, and a wide range of holiday and religious events.
Reporting to the Vice President of Administration and Finance, the Performing Arts Center Director’s focus is on operational and financial leadership of the Theater and related event spaces, long-term planning and overall growth, and developing effective workflows and cultivating projects that help expand and enhance the theater account. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Overall oversight of theater productions, presentations, and facilities rentals for both CUNY and non-CUNY clients, and of expanding and maintaining our client roster.
Supervision, evaluation and professional development of full-time and part-time performing arts center staff, including the technical and production management team.
Recruitment of specialized freelancers able to meet our clients' production needs, such as lighting, electric, grip, staging, rigging, video, audio, and streaming, while following all applicable CUNY and City Tech guidelines.
Oversight of all performing arts center financial operations, including for related entities such as the Auxiliary Enterprise Board (AEB), working with both our clients and the Business Office to ensure accuracy of all payments and transactions.
Supervision of event ticketing and box office operations, establishing center revenue goals and targets, and overall fiscal reporting, in compliance with best practices.
Serve as primary liaison between campus offices for event coordination, including for large conferences and special events, based upon client need.
Administration of contract negotiations with all clients, as directed by the College President, the Vice-President of Administration and Finance, and College Counsel.
Contract enforcement, including adherence to local laws and ordinances, and routine reporting and updates on all contractual matters.
Networking and cultivation of relationships with community and cultural partners, funding entities, public officials, industry leaders and local media on behalf of the Theater.
Oversight of the development and implementation of the Theater’s marketing, branding and public relations efforts.
Collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders, including college administration, faculty, staff, students, community organizations and the local performing arts community, to direct and advance the Theater’s creative, educational and community service mission.
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in technical theater, stage management, arts administration or related field preferred.
At least five years of experience at a senior-level position in a professional theater, performing arts center, special events center, conference center or similar venue, preferably within an educational setting or higher education institution.
Prior experience with employee selection, supervision, evaluation, training, management of a team, and fostering a cooperative and inclusive work environment is essential.
Managerial experience with technical production, events management, marketing, fundraising, and budgeting and fiscal administration.
Background in community relations and forging strategic partnerships with external stakeholders.
Familiarity with some or all of the following: theatrical lighting, rigging and sound systems; theater safety and building maintenance; theater accessibility and accommodation services; video production and webcasting operations, including multiCAM live streaming; event booking and ticketing platforms.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong attention to detail, customer service orientation, and organizational skills.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Plans, directs, and markets Performing Arts Center/Theatre programs and presentations at other venues throughout a College or Unit.
Works with senior management to create a vision and strategy for performing arts.
Brings artistic vision to the organization by planning and presenting innovative and successful programming.
Develops and implements creative and cost-effective marketing plans to attract both program sponsors and audiences.
Manages revenue targets and financial plans, reporting on financial operations consistent with best practices in the not-for-profit/public sectors.
Provides programming to fulfill the community service mission of the College or Unit.
Manages relationships between the center and College academic and administrative departments.
Cultivates relationships with external customers.
Hires, trains, and manages Center staff.
Performs related duties as assigned.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$107,789 - $115,333. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
