The TDS teams include Information Security, Planning (architecture and PMO), Application Development, HR & Payroll Development, Infrastructure, and Client Services teams. Position Summary Come join and manage our dynamic team of highly skilled database professionals and support our critical enterprise applications hosted at AWS. Here you will have the ability to make a difference and have a real influence in how we best manage our database platforms and pair them with AWS native services. This position is in the Enterprise Technology Services group within the Technology Delivery Services (TDS) department. The incumbent will work closely with UC business partners, UC Path Center, Project Teams and others and leads a diverse team who deliver managed database services and support to system-wide applications hosted at AWS. We are looking for an experienced operational Database Manager with a broad set of skills including database and application performance tuning and integration as well as managing AWS native database services. Having a wide breadth of experience, the manager applies business process and analysis with organizational objectives to resolve complex issues with multi-campus and partner impacts. Using data and reporting metrics, the ideal candidate will provide an overall vision and strategy for all the major technical components of their services as well as monitor, recommend and initiate changes to improve performance and efficiency. The position is responsible for managing the daily operational workload of the staff, providing mentorship and guidance as well as overseeing the underlying technologies that power our services. The successful candidate will define tasks and make assignments and ensure that the delivery of tasks are completed on time. The Database Manager will create and ensure that their team adheres to all aspects of UCOP TDS based process, workflows, and policies.
Key Responsibilities 25% Manages work quality and deliverables for all components of team's portfolio of services. Ensures standards in work output and SLA's are met. 25% Facilitates and coordinates regular discussion with peers and business partners to set expectations and work priorities. Lead and promote team's services and manages team's projects as needed. 20% Provides direct supervision of technical team, sets goals and expectations. Provides mentorship to grow staff competency 20% Provides portfolio roadmaps and ensures services are secured and on current version of software. Responsible for the security and review of all database services. 10% Oversees and manages software licenses and maintenance contracts required to support database services. Creates purchase orders and develops and maintains operational budget.
Experience Required Qualifications Min 8 years of experience managing enterprise database platforms (Oracle, MySQL, DB2, MSSQL) inclusive of at least 5 years of experience managing an IT Operational support team providing 24x7 support. Min 2 years of experience managing infrastructure lead IT projects (database migrations).
Preferred Qualifications Min 2 years of experience managing cloud based or cloud hosted database services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
Skills and Abilities Required Qualifications Applies Information Technology operational best practices to effectively manage IT services and solutions. Possesses a broad working knowledge of applications programming development practices to help troubleshoot performance problems. Strong ability to gather, organize, and analyze KPI's and metrics to improve processes and service levels. Possesses skills necessary to accomplish department / section objectives and address related problems and issues in an effective manner. Possesses thorough knowledge of Database service management to effectively plan strategic goals, technology assessment and roadmap direction for the group. Demonstrated effective skills in managing and mentoring technical staff. Experienced in Service Management processes and can lead change management activities for the team and managing their impact across the unit or department. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics and solutions to individuals and groups with at all management levels and across various technical experiences.
