General Summary of Position
The incumbent in this position is an Executive Director of Oncology Services for the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The incumbent has hospital-wide responsibilities and is expected to appraise, forecast and determine a desired set of future conditions and strategies required to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization. The Executive Director Oncology Services provides leadership, direction and operational management to the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) clinical services in accordance with the mission, policies and philosophy of MGUH. He/She will ensure accountability to operational, strategic and financial objectives of the oncology service line and services with clearly defined timeframes and accountabilities. Working closely with the executive team of GUH, medical faculty and associated voluntary medical staff, they will identify programs, services and associated competencies required to build and expand oncology programs and services of MGUH & LCCC. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Administers and maintains all department services in accordance with standards and criteria established by the Joint Commission (JC), state, local, and federal agencies to ensure compliance with those external requirements. Works collaboratively with other areas of the organization to ensure all areas of responsibility conform to applicable requirements of government and regulatory agencies including JC. Develops an effective organizational structure and processes, aligned with the MGUH strategic plan, to ensure that operational, financial and strategic goals are achieved for this service line. Provides direction and guidance for all aspects of daily administration and management of the cancer center and services. Works closely with physician and nursing leadership at MGUH and LCCC to oversee the development and implementation of clinical protocols for all oncology services across patient care settings meeting operational objectives. Works in partnership with LCCC, MGUH, GU School of Medicine, the Chair and Administrator of Internal Medicine, the Chief of Oncology, and other academic medical staff and voluntary medical staff in achieving the facility's strategic and operational goals and objectives. Prepares departmental operational and capital budgets and develops and annually updates a long-range financial plan that supports the organization's strategic plans and objectives. Monitors all financial operations to ensure that the service line is fiscally responsible. Prepares and presents necessary financial, statistical and operational data for new programs or business including return on investment. Develops and provides objective criteria for measuring new business processes. Maintains a thorough understanding of clinical reimbursement and managed care issues specific to an oncology service line. Identifies opportunities to optimize clinical reimbursement and implement new policies and procedures as necessary. Prepares Business Plans for the Department for all new faculty and programs. Responsible for the financial and operational management of Infusion services, Lombardi Adult and Pediatric Clinic locations, Bone Marrow Transplant program, Blood & Marrow Collection program, MedStar Medical Group oncology operations, and participation in Medstar regional oncology services at MGUH. Monitors all patient care programs and activities to ensure high quality care and patient-centered safety programs. Develops integrated systems that support and continuously improve LCC's patient experience. Actively participates in community activities that promote MGUH and LCC's mission, programs, and services. Performs personnel management functions including interviewing, hiring, supervising, coaching, counseling, evaluating, and terminating employees. Oversees payroll and personnel paperwork functions for the departments, including maintaining staff compensation data and maintaining time and attendance records. Performs other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the position and area. Minimum Qualifications Education Master's degree M.S. in health care administration, business administration, public health administration required or Master's degree related field required
Experience 5-7 years Experience in oncology management and/or large physician practice management required and Less than 1 year Experience with a NCI designated oncology program preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to function effectively in a highly political environment requiring high levels of diplomacy and sound judgment and the ability to manage through influence in a matrix environment; Knowledge of oncology, physician practice management, health care payment systems and sound financial management practices; Demonstrates motivation and initiative in seeking continued professional growth and development; Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulation; Ability to develop strategic and operational plans; Ability to work in a highly collaborative and participative way; Ability to influence people in their opinions, attitudes, and beliefs and decisions; Ability to make decisions based on verifiable and/or measurable data or criteria; Ability to develop positive working relationships; Ability to negotiate and mediate complex and often competing interests; Ability to communicate orally and in writing to diverse audiences.
