This position serves as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Education an Experience
* Qualified applicants will possess a High School diploma or equivalent. * Is currently fully breastfeeding and/or has fully breastfed at least one baby for at least six months, is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other lactating parents enjoy a positive experience. * Is participating in, has participated in and/or is familiar with WIC programs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
* Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor. * Receives a caseload of WIC eligible birth and lactating parents and makes routine periodic contacts with all those assigned. * Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new parents, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. * Helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns. * Counsels WIC eligible pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, text messaging, and/or hospital visits at routine intervals * Available outside the usual 8 to 5 working schedule to new lactating parents who are having breastfeeding problems. * Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with patients. * Refers parents, according to established protocols, to WIC, a lactation consultant, the physician or nurse. Or other appropriate services per ChristianaCare's policies. * Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups. * Attends WIC staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops per the WIC contract * Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that may be provided by the supervisor. * May assist WIC and ChristianaCare staff in promoting breastfeeding support and peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned. * Provides timely reports including data and patient activity information as the department requires. * Works to create linkages with WIC, ChristianaCare programs and other community resources for pregnant and new parents. * Provide support to the Outpatient Lactation Clinicc * Provide pre-natal and post-partum breast feeding support for inpatient hospital, outpatient office or community setting of ChristianaCare campuses
Special Requirements:
Attends a series of breastfeeding trainings and classes. Observes other peer counselors or breastfeeding experts helping mothers breastfeed. Reads assigned books or materials about breastfeeding.
Hours:
Ability to work flexible schedule, including every other Saturday. Required to attend community events as needed.
