JOB SUMMARY

A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

* Provides breastfeeding promotion, support, and information to WIC clients by telephone or direct contact in WIC clinic. Offers pregnant and breastfeeding advice and anticipatory guidance on normal course of breastfeeding. (20) * Builds a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts throughout their breastfeeding experience. Provides closely scheduled contacts with breastfeeding mothers during the early postnatal period with goal fo reducing occurrence of breastfeeding problems. (20) * Yields complex breastfeeding issues or problems which are beyond the scope of practice of the Peer Counselor to the Breastfeeding Coordinator or alternate breastfeeding specialty or health care provider. (10) * Is available outside the usual normal working hours to help WIC breastfeeding moms who are having breastfeeding problems. (5) * Teaches assembly, use, and cleaning of breast pumps and expression and storage of human milk . (10) * Identifies the need for referrals to other local community resources. (5) * Keeps accurate documentation of contacts with mothers. Routinely reports activities to the Breastfeeding Coordinator. (20) * Respects each client by keeping her information strictly confidential. (5) * Attends staff meetings and required breastfeeding conferences/training, including trainings/observations with the regional Lactation Consultation. (5)

MARGINAL JOB DUTIES

* Assist WIC staff when necessary by answering phones or greeting clients or other duties as requested. * Assists in the planning and teaching of breastfeeding classes or support groups. * Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

* Education: High school graduate or GED required. * Licensure: N/A * Experience: Experience with WIC. * Skills: Good Communication and organizational skills. Able to work independently. Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers. * Interpersonal skills: Ability to communicate effectively with, and relate to, a diverse population in a professional and courteous manner. Flexible and able to function as a team member. Good verbal and written skills. * Physical Effort: Medium, may need to lift babies into mothers' arms. Mostly Standing/sitting * Hours of Work: Part-time, can work between 10-20 hours a week. Flexible and varied. Telecommuting not available for this position. * Travel: May need to travel to more than one clinic or to client's home. Reimbursement for travel between clinics or for home or hospital visits.

MICHIGAN WIC POLICY REQUIREMENTS

* Have breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months. * Be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and have a desire to help other clients. * Be familiar with WIC; current or previous WIC client is preferred. * Have good communication and organizational skills. * Be fluent in the language of the majority of clients they counsel. * Be a member of the community for whom they serve.
