Job Description Summary:
The Executive Director, Chemistry is responsible for driving medicinal chemistry efforts in a fast-paced small molecule discovery research organization by leading multiple teams of medicinal chemists to guide the rational design of new agents for the potential treatment of a range of indications. She/He understands the challenges of discovering new medicines and has a demonstrated track record of advancing clinical candidates.
The Executive Director, Chemistry provides guidance in all aspects of the small molecule drug discovery process including Hit ID, Lead Generation, Lead Optimization, and Development Candidate Selection. Additionally, she/he plays a key role as a senior leader in the research organization, providing guidance, vision, and direction for the organization. As such, a commitment to build strong collaborative relationships with colleagues from Biology, Pharmacology, DMPK, Toxicology, and Legal is a must.
This position will adhere to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Primary duties/responsibilities:
- Supervise and mentor medicinal chemists and chemistry group leaders for multiple projects
- Effectively apply medicinal chemistry strategies to optimize compounds for clinical application
- Counsel with and advise the research leadership team on all aspects of drug discovery
- Collaborate with leadership from other departments and functions
- Provide strategic and scientific direction to overseas CROs for the delivery of high-quality test compounds and intermediates
- Understand the design and function of state-of-the-art chemistry labs
- Understand the fundamentals of IP protection for small molecules
- Demonstrate compliance with corporate, departmental, and job-specific requirements
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.
- Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry with 15+ years of industry experience as a medicinal chemistry leader in a pharmaceutical or biotech company
* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.
- Strong proficiency in fundamental aspects of drug discovery and demonstrated ability to advance drug discovery programs from early stages to development
- Track record of innovation and impact on programs documented through co-inventorship on issued patents and authorship of publications in peer-reviewed journals (may include both successful advances and smart terminations)
- Strong problem-solving skills and synthetic knowledge
- Ability to gather, document, and analyze information from competitive sources such as patents and meetings
- Proven leadership capability in cross-functional teams, either as project team leader or co-lead
- Proven track record of supervising PhD level chemists, providing mentorship and training in medicinal chemistry
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to present rational arguments based on the analysis of key project data

Expected Base Salary Range:
$227,800 - $286,800. The base salary offered will be contingent on assessment of candidate education level, background, and experience relative to the requirements of the position they are being considered for, as well as review of internal equity.
In addition to base salary, PTC employees are also eligible for short- and long-term incentives. All eligible employees may also enroll in PTC's medical, dental, vision, and retirement savings plans.
