About this Opportunity

Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for an Environmental Compliance Officer to join our team. Working closely with Public Utility leadership, the Environmental Compliance Officer plays a vital role in helping to ensure that a resilient water infrastructure is maintained, and that clean, reliable, and efficient water and wastewater services are available to individuals across the County.

The Environmental Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance with permits issued to the County regarding water and wastewater treatment, collection, and distribution systems. Work includes:
  • applying for and reviewing permits and responding to regulatory inquiries from state and federal entities.
  • keeping senior management aware of new DEQ compliance strategies and new regulations and their implications for the Public Utilities Department.
  • developing environmental compliance strategies to meet existing and future regulatory requirements.
  • developing goals and objectives to meet regulatory compliance, including providing budget information for funding of directives as set forth by the senior management team and regulatory agencies.
  • ensuring staff are trained and aware of their roles in meeting regulatory requirements and County policy.
  • serving as a liaison for Public Utilities with regulatory community and local/regional environmental organizations.
  • reporting spills, preparing Public Notices, addressing violations, and other correspondence with NCDEQ, NCPWSS, and other regulatory agencies
The Environmental Compliance Officer is also responsible for developing and submitting State and Federal reports, including CCR, Local Water Supply Plan, Inter-Basin Transfer Annual Report, Annual Biosolids Reports, Annual Wastewater Treatment and Collection Reports, Wastewater Spill Reports, and other applicable reports necessary to meet County and statutory requirements. This position reports directly to the Water Resources Manager.
Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental sciences, environmental management, or related course study AND seven (7) years of professional/managerial work experience with environmental compliance; OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Valid NC or SC driver license required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and standard software.

Physical Requirements
