Title and Summary Manager, Global Economist Overview The Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) is an economics lab powering scale at Mastercard by owning economic thought leadership in support of Mastercard’s efforts to build a more inclusive and sustainable digital economy. The Economics Institute was launched in 2020 to analyze economic trends through the lens of the consumer to deliver tailored and actionable insights on economic issues for customers, partners, and policymakers. The Institute is composed of a team of economists and data scientists that utilize and synthesize the anonymized and aggregated data from the Mastercard network together with public data to bring powerful insights to life, in the form of 1:1 presentations, global thought leadership, media participation, and commercial work through the company’s product suites. About the Role We are looking for an economist to synthesize and maintain a global narrative at MEI, derived from the views of each of our regional Chief Economists. This individual will report to the Global Head of Growth and Operations at MEI and will have the following responsibilities: Develop and maintain a cohesive global narrative for MEI, partnering with our regional Chief Economists to recognize patterns and macro-drivers spanning regions. Support the regional Chief Economists and their local teams in thinking through the inter-regional impacts of their findings and forecasts. Evangelize the integration of these globally relevant themes into ongoing regional economic analysis. Partner with the Global Head of Growth and Operations to develop and maintain a range of market-facing delivery formats such as blogs, subscription reports, one-pagers, and content in support of internal briefings and internal stakeholder organizations. Support the creation of briefing documents for Mastercard leadership teams. Create content and present insights as a representative of Mastercard in customer forums, industry events, and consulting read-outs, positioning us as an industry leader with highly differentiated capabilities. Work with MEI data scientists and consulting teams to explore alternative data sets and forecasting to push the boundaries in more traditional economics. Help drive the story creation for interactive and tailored presentations. All About You Formally trained economist with a BA+ economics degree (or related field) and 5+ years work experience. Private sector experience covering the global economy or a major region – US, Eurozone, G7, China, etc. Strong collaborator across teams within the institute and broader Mastercard. Evidence of both orthodox and experimental approaches in economic thinking and application with an entrepreneurial mindset. Manage complex projects and timelines effectively. Highly skilled communicator with excellent writing capabilities. Familiarity with coding in R, Tableau, and other analytical tools. Second language preferred. In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary based on location, experience, and other qualifications for the role and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role.
