Job Summary

Responsible for handling a variety of routine legal matters generated by the activities of the University, including drafting and reviewing contracts for the General Counsel and the staff of the Office of the General Counsel (OGC). Provides a high level of professional legal service to the University in the areas of advancement, athletics, and museums. Works as a part of the Transactional Practice Team. Serves in a senior level position in the Office of the General Counsel advising the Senior Vice President for Advancement and other advancement and alumni relations staff on legal matters impacting on, and agreements or transactions involving, the Office of Advancement and/or the FIU Foundation and the Office of Alumni Relations. Serves as the primary attorney contact from the Office of the General Counsel to the FIU Foundation Board of Directors and the FIU Athletics Corp., including attending all board meetings of those respective entities and providing advice regarding governance matters. Oversees outside counsel in the handling of major university transactions in all areas (excluding real estate, debt issuances, research, and health care). Transactions may include gift agreements, academic agreements, athletics agreements, and non-traditional revenue generating agreements. Advises regarding the laws on tax-exempt organizations and the laws of Florida pertaining to the affiliated organizations of state universities, including the FIU Foundation and the FIU Athletics Finance Corp. Advises on tax law questions with the assistance of outside counsel, as appropriate. Advises on legal matters involving the University's investment policy and investments. Advises on legal questions specific to museums, including questions regarding intellectual property, accreditation, and compliance considerations. Advises the University community, and particularly, the Office of Strategic Communications, Government and External Affairs, regarding trademark law, including providing trademark management. Minimum Qualifications: Law degree (L.L.B. or J.D.) and licensed to practice law with at least ten (10) years of experience as an attorney. Must be a member of the Florida Bar or become a member within twelve months of employment. Departmental Requirements: Juris Doctor (J.D.). Must be a member of the Florida Bar. Desired Qualifications: Extensive experience working as in-house counsel or outside counsel for public, non-profit or private organizations or Florida governmental entity with an emphasis on transactional matters.
