Summary:
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities:
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
- Updating patient information and collecting/storing specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explaining the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
- Demonstrating techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understanding all physicians' orders and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order.
- Checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Packaging specimens for transport and storing specimen samples according to required temperature.
- Accurately labeling and following procedures outlined by specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
- Understanding and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attending annual department trainings and answering telephone calls to read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states.
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0-2 years of experience.
