Job Summary
This position assists in the planning, execution, and administration of the Ranger Adventure and Junior Ranger Adventure camp programs, while providing leadership to other seasonal staff and volunteers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and facilitate recreational activities, including archery, fishing, paddling, teambuilding, and geocaching.
- Keep neat and accurate records including incident and injury reports, equipment damage reports, documentation of behavioral issues, time sheets, and camper registration.
- Oversee pick-up and drop-off of camp participants.
- Assist with setup and breakdown of camp facilities and equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance on camp equipment such as kayaks, fishing poles, and archery equipment.
- Assist in developing schedules and procedures for camp activities and preparing end-of-season camp reports.
- Operate District vehicles as needed including work trucks, ATVs, and boats.
- Respond promptly to any emergency situations, providing first aid as needed.
- Provide District information to participants and the public regarding the preserves, recreational opportunities, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
- Assist at District special events and programs.
- Assist supervisor with the selection of staff, schedule, train, provide guidance and communicate day-to-day work activities, department expectations, and work rules. Relay and provide input regarding work performance, training needs and growth opportunities while promoting morale.
- Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits; Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and work procedures; Follow all safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the District's safety and risk management program; Keep work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards; Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.
- Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
- 18 years of age or older at time of hire.
- Valid Driver's License in good standing.
- Must have and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certification or obtain upon hire (training provided).
- Must have and maintain Illinois Mandated Reporter certification or obtain upon hire (training provided).
- 1 season of previous camp counselor experience.
- Experience with outdoor recreational activities including hiking, archery, fishing, and paddling.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable interacting with youth of varying age ranges.
Schedule: Position starts May 20th. Primarily works Monday - Friday from 8AM - 4PM but occasional evenings and weekends may be needed.
Pay: $17.50/hour.
Work Environment: Outdoors in all types of weather conditions with exposure to insects and other wildlife.
Other Information: Please bring a bagged lunch. Position reports out of Ranger Ops Facility in Blackwell Forest Preserve.
