Class Specifications

The primary function of an employee in this class is to set up for and officiate at designated sports. The position is under the direct supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or Recreation Coordinator, although some latitude is allowed for independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of the position are performed in a public sports field environment.
Examples of Work Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Sets up equipment for and officiates at designated athletic games;
  • Supervises competition, including spectators and participants, during events;
  • Cleans up and closes facility after events;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance City policies, procedures and safety practices.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs duties for co-workers in their absence;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Rules, regulations, officiating techniques, and scorekeeping for designated sports;
  • Basic equipment maintenance and repair methods;
  • Dispute mediation and resolution.

Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively with participants, spectators, coaches, other City employees, and the public.


Acceptable Experience and Training

  • One (1) to two (2) years experience in activities being officiated; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Special Qualifications
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Satisfactory criminal background investigation.
Essential Physical Abilities
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person during a competitive game situation;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and observe and officiate during competitive game situations;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate timing and scorekeeping equipment;
